BEREA, Ky. – The Maryville College cross country teams competed at the Mike and Mary Kay Johnson Classic this weekend, with the women finishing third and the men placing fourth.
The men's team competed in its first 8K of the season, scoring 121 points. James LeNeve led the Scots with a 22nd-place finish in 29:31, followed by Adyn Elliott in 28th at 29:50. Tyler Tangel finished 30th in 30:06, while Paul Kanios (37th, 30:56) and ErickTrejo (38th, 30:58) rounded out the team's scorers. Maryville's top nine runners finished within two minutes of one another.
Head coach Carringer-Adams was pleased with the team's effort and teamwork in its first 8K of the season.
"The men's team did a great job today working together as a team and passing other competitors throughout the race. We still have some work to do to get where we want to be, but overall very pleased with the teamwork and effort I saw today for the first 8K of the season."
The women turned in a strong performance, with every runner recording either a collegiate or overall personal-best time in the 5K. The Scots scored 76 points and set a school record for the fastest team average time at 21:41.
Megan Shinn led Maryville with a fourth-place finish in 20:22. Her performance moved her to the second-fastest 5K performer in Maryville history and gave her the third-fastest 5K time in program history. Maddie Adair finished 18th in 21:47, followed by Madeline Edwards in 21st at 21:57, Catherine Money in 22nd at 22:01 and Charlotte Wilson in 24th at 22:19. Adair's performance moved her to ninth on Maryville's all-time 5K performers list.
Carringer-Adams was pleased with the women's performance and the records set at the meet. 
"The women's team has had a phenomenal start to the season with a first-place win at TWU and now a school record at Berea. They executed the goals for this race exactly as planned, and before I knew what their official times were, I knew this was the best the women's team had ever competed as a team in my four years here. The season has just begun, and we are going to keep on working hard and continue to have a historic season."
Maryville College cross country returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Scots host the Maryville College XC Invitational.
