SALEM, Va. – Maryville College women's soccer battled Roanoke College to a 1-1 draw Friday evening at Donald J. Kerr Stadium, as the Scots held a one-goal advantage for nearly 55 minutes before the Maroons found the equalizer late in the second half.
Maryville (1-0-1) struck first in the 30th minute when Madelyn Miller found the back of the net at the 29:13 mark. Anne Marie Konieczny provided the assist on the play, giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage.
The goal came after Maryville goalkeeper Trinity Atkinson had already made an important save to keep Roanoke off the scoreboard. The Maroons generated five shots in the opening half, with Atkinson making one save as the Scots carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Maryville nearly added to its advantage just before the break. Konieczny put a shot on frame in the 45th minute, but Roanoke goalkeeper Grace Suchy made the save to keep the deficit at one.
Roanoke came out aggressively in the second half, putting significant pressure on the Scots' defense. The Maroons registered 12 shots after halftime, including a stretch of four shots in just over four minutes early in the period. Atkinson continued to stand tall in goal, making saves on attempts from Elissa Cesky, Irene Orndorff and Frances Thackston to preserve Maryville's lead.
Maryville's defense limited Roanoke's opportunities despite the increased pressure, while the Scots looked for chances to extend their advantage. Lolah Wunderlich recorded Maryville's lone shot of the second half, sending an attempt wide in the 77th minute.
The Maroons finally broke through in the 85th minute. After Brynn Alvarez sent a shot just wide, Lauren Fisher found the equalizer at 84:12, with Alvarez credited with the assist.
Maryville responded by earning a corner kick less than two minutes later, but neither side could find the decisive goal during the final minutes. The match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.
Atkinson finished the night with four saves, making three stops in the second half, while Roanoke goalkeeper Grace Suchy recorded two saves. Roanoke finished with a 17-4 advantage in total shots, but Maryville put three of its four attempts on target.
The Scots will return to action Saturday against Lynchburg at 5:30 p.m. to close out the weekend in Salem.
