Rocky Mauriello joined Maryville head coach Clint Helton's baseball staff as an assistant coach and pitching coach in November 2022.
Mauriello returned to his alma mater after coaching stops at Olivet Nazarene in Illinois, Florence-Darlington Technical College in South Carolina, and then Division I Delaware State. He also spent the two summer seasons in Traverse City, Michigan, as a Northwoods League pitching coach, winning a championship with the Pit Spitters in 2021.
“I’m definitely excited to welcome Rocky back to the program,” Helton said. “This is his alma mater. He has a great pitching mind and has coached at some high-level places recently. He’s also an incredible person who cares about relationships and the development of both the individual and the player.”
Helton remembers Mauriello possessing many great leadership qualities during his Maryville playing days.
“A servant-leader is how I would describe him,” Helton said. “He’s always going to put others in front of him and he still does to this day. He wants to see others succeed before himself, a quality we talk about daily in our program. He loved to compete, and he was the consummate leader.”
At Delaware State, Mauriello helped the Hornets to their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title since 2014. The Hornets then made the MEAC championship finals for the first time since 2012 and just missed winning their first conference tournament title in 33 years.
In the spring of 2021, Mauriello was the pitching coach at Florence-Darlington. The Flo-Dar team went 46-8, won the region championship and advanced to the NJCAA World Series. Flo-Dar earned top-10 national rankings in all the polls and led the region in every pitching statistical category, including a team 3.66 ERA.
While serving as pitching coach at Olivet Nazarene, Mauriello pursued a Master’s of Christian Ministry.
“I am so excited to come back,” Mauriello said. “Maryville College is home to me. It is a special place with great people and where excellence is an expectation. I am very appreciative of Coach Helton for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to dive in and get to work with this talented group.
“I am expecting to have a very fun season!”
Mauriello pitched for the Scots from 2016-19, posting a 1.67 earned-run average over 24 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He was voted team captain and was a three-time recipient of the Ken Stinnett Coaches Award. His leadership also led to a J.D. Davis Award nomination as the top student-athlete on campus.
While in college, Mauriello began coaching in the travel-ball circuit with the East Cobb Patriots out of Marietta, Georgia. After two years as an assistant/pitching coach for the 17U team, Mauriello served as head coach for the next two years of the 16U team.
He graduated from Maryville College in 2019 with a degree in Physical Education.
In the fall of 2021, Mauriello received certifications for Rapsodo, Driveline Pitch Design, and Driveline Foundations of Pitching.
A native of Conyers, Georgia, just southeast of Atlanta, Mauriello is married to the former Katie Orr of Maryville. They were married in May 2019.
