Box Score 2 The Scots were defeated in the USA South Championships by Christopher Newport University by the score of 3-1 on Saturday evening.
The Maryville College Scots volleyball team advanced to the 2012 USA South Championship match against CNU following a 3-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College in a semi-final challenge. The Scots eliminated the Bishops by the score of 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-17.
Kara Strickland posted a double-double for the Scots with a game-high 19 kills while returning 14 digs. Kelsey Handel added a dozen kills and four blocks while Kristy Newman added nine kills. Teri Lind directed the offense with 43 assists and paced the defense with 23 to record a double-double of her own. Kristen Sharp recorded eight kills while also returning 18 digs.
NC Wesleyan, who finished their season with a 21-10 record, was paced by Taylor Johnson and Meredith each recording a team-high ten kills.
In the championship match, the nation's No.5 ranked Captains of CNU earned their way to the final with wins over Methodist and Averett.
Maryville rallied for a key first set victory by the score of 33-31. The Captains took each of the next three sets to claim the 2012 league title by the scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-14.
In the final match, Maryville was led by USA South All-Tournament selections Kara Strickland, Teri Lind, and Kelsey Handel. Strickland finished her senior campaign with another double-double posting 14 kills and 15 digs. Teri Lind led MC with 34 assists while Handel tallied 13 kills.
The Scots finish the season with a 21-12 overall record and a second place finish in their first USA South season of competition.
