Box Score After falling behind late in the first half, the Scots would not be denied in the second scoring two goals in the closing minutes to capture a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon against the Tigers of the University of the South.
After a hard fought first half, Sewanee would strike first with just over a minute remaining in the half to make the score 1-0. Maryville would control the stat sheet throughout, registering 17 shots to 11 for Sewanee and dominating the time of possession battle.
The hard work by the Scots would pay off in the 76th minute as Tony Diaz played a cross off a Sewanee player and into the back of the Sewanee goal, scoring an own goal. The goal gave life to the Scots on the back end of a Saturday and Sunday game day weekend.
Maryville would score the game winner as a long ball was played by John Robertson to Danny Sassano. Sassano promptly found the back of the net in the 85th minute to score a much needed non conference victory. The Scots have managed 13 goals to only two for Sewanee over their last four meetings.
"We fought hard today," said head coach Pepe Fernandez "We've always handled Sewanee and even though we started off slow and have a young team I know our guys would be fine. "
The win brings the Scots t0 3-1-1 (1-0) on the year. Maryville will travel to Christopher Newport next Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
