Scots split USA South tri-match with CNU, Greensboro

During their first USA South tri-match challenge, the Maryville College Scots volleyball team split with league challenges. Nationally ranked Christopher Newport University took the first match of the day with a 3-1 win over MC. CNU then swept Greensboro 3-0 before the Scots swept the Pride 3-0 to conclude the USA South tri-match on MC's Randy Lambert Court.

CNU's Bailey Jensen led the Captains with 13 kills and Chastity Lacy and Jessie Kolden each threw down a dozen kills to move CNU past Maryville 20-25, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-20. MC's Teri Lind was spectacular during the match posting a triple-double. The talented setter recorded 11 kills, 30 assists, and 11 digs to help the Scots. Lind, Kristen Sharp, and Kara Strickland paced MC at the net with 11 kills each. Kristy Newman added 10 kills. Sharp and Strickland added double-double efforts with 17 and 15 digs respectively. Mallory Bonee led MC's defense with and additional 16 digs.

In the middle match, CNU's Cory Harris led the Captains at the net with nine kills. Greensboro used a 14 kill effort by Liz Widenhouse to keep pace, but fell to Christopher Newport by the scores of 25-17, 25-11, and 25-16. Rachel Conway had 28 assists and Abby Hogge added 13 digs for the Captains. Danielle Simpson tallied 20 digs for the Pride.

Maryville closed out the day with a 25-17, 25-17, and 25-22 sweep over Greensboro College. Kelsey Handel and Kara Strickland each threw down nine kills. Jillian Galewski added eight kills. Lauren Bonee directed the offense with 34 assists while Bonee and Strickland recorded 11 and 10 digs respectively. Greensboro was led at the net by Olivia Gough's nine kills.

The Scots (9-9, 1-1 USA South) will be on the road October 5-6. They will travel to Berry College before playing a USA South tri-match in Demorest, Georgia on October 6th against William Peace and Piedmont.
