MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The USA South Volleyball Tournament kicked off on Friday afternoon as the South Division's No. 1 seed, Maryville, knocked off the North Division's No. 5 seed, Greensboro, 3-0, at Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College.
The Scots (22-15) posted a narrow 25-22 win in the first set before pulling away from the Pride (13-20) with a 25-10 victory in the second set and a 25-5 win in the third.
For the match, the Scots hit .451, including .553 over the final two sets, compared to just .050 for the Pride. Maryville also held an 11-2 advantage in service aces.
Kristen Sharp led a balanced offensive attack for Maryville with nine kills, Mary Kate White added eight and Kelsey Handel chipped in seven. All three hit over .380, including a .778 mark for Handel. Lauren Bonee and Kristi Bowlin each had 12 assists, and Mallory Bonee recorded a team-high eight digs. Handel, Mallory Bonee and Bowlin each had three service aces, and Handel chipped in five total blocks.
For the Pride, Liz Widenhouse notched a match-high 10 kills and Megan Baranko and Molly McGinnis each came up with five. Cortland Phillips directed the offense to the tune of 21 assists and also recorded a team-best seven digs. Widenhouse matched Phillips with seven digs, and Carissa McCumber added six.
With the win, the Scots advance to the semifinal round where they await the winner of the Covenant vs. Meredith quarterfinal match.
