Box Score Birmingham Southern's Larry Thomas connected on the final shot to send the game into overtime and then poured in 10 of the Panthers 13 points to help Birmingham Southern earn a come from behind road victory over the Maryville College Scots in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Sunday evening by the score of 72-68.
The Panthers out shot the Scots 47% to 31% in the first half, but Maryville held on to a slim 29-24 halftime lead due to their 7-for-15 success rate from beyond the arc. The Panthers continued to pound the ball inside with 14 points but MC had to rely on their perimeter attack scoring only four points in the paint before intermission.
MC's shooting went cold in the second half and the Scots were beat on the boards by a 42-28 margin. The Panthers battled back on 14-of-28 shooting from the floor with both teams struggling from the perimeter.
Maryville's Oscar Butler hit a trey with 21 second remaining to give the Scots a 59-57 lead, but Thomas' jumper sent the game into extra action.
Thomas closed out the game with a basket, a pair of threes, and a pair of free-throws to secure the victory for Birmingham Southern.
Birmingham Southern (6-1) was led by Larry Thomas' double-double. He finished with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Alex Avery added 11 points while Ian Thom tossed in 10 points.
Maryville (5-4) was paced by Spencer Shoffner's 28 points. The junior guard hit 8-of-12 three-pointers while finishing 9-of-16 from the field. Oscar Butler added 19 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Tanner Torres added seven assists and four steals in the loss.
The Scots will prepare for the Daytona Beach Shootout on December 19th and 20th. They will challenge Marymount (VA) and Wesleyan (CT) in Daytona Beach, Florida before enjoying the holiday season.
