Box Score The Maryville College Scots celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 108-78 win against the Huntingdon College Hawks.
The Scots got out to a rough start to the game, as the team shot 0-7 from the floor in the first four minutes. Shooting 6-of-8 from the free-throw line helped, as the first field goal of the game came in the form of a trey from Spencer Shoffner off a Christian Ford assist. The bucket resulted in a 9-8 Maryville lead.
The Scots put together an 18-5 run, as a steal and a dunk by Oscar Butler gave the Maryville a 24-13 advantage. The 11-point lead wouldn't be relinquished, as the Scots extended it to a 49-32 margin at the half, while shooting 45 percent from the floor.
Maryville extended its lead during the second half, while shooting an impressive 51 percent from the floor – 48 percent from long range.
Senior J.P. Burris had six rebounds, six assists and four points for the game. He leaves the Scots after a breakout year during his senior season, having career bests in every offensive statistic on the floor. In 69 career games, he shot 40 percent, both from the floor and beyond the arc. He also bucketed more than 77 percent of his free-throw attempts.
Fellow senior Craig Raye finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Raye will leave Maryville College after pulling down more than 200 rebounds and scoring more than 400 points for the Scots. He led the team in steals as a junior and averaged just under six points per game during his collegiate career.
Louis Pecora was also honored. He entered college with this season's seniors, but due to his third knee injury during his sophomore season, he was forced to give up basketball on a competitive level. He has served as a student assistant coach for the past two seasons.
Jaumonee Byrd led the Scots with a double-double 22 points and 11 rebounds. Shoffner had 19 points, while shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Butler had 14, while Joey Bodewig and Christian Ford had 10 points each. Ford also had seven assists. Maryville scored 42 points in the paint.
Huntingdon was led by a duo of 17-pointers in Jason Varney and Austin Hill.
The Scots will look next to the USA South Conference tournament. The Scots go into the tournament as the No. 1-seeded team in the conference, as the tournament will be hosted on Randy Lambert Court. First round games will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27.
