Box Score The Piedmont College Lions used a three-point basket as time expired to defeat the Maryville College Scots in men's basketball on Saturday afternoon in Demorest, Georgia.
Maryville's Jaumonee Byrd connected on a lay up with three seconds remaining in the game and the Scots' head coach Randy Lambert called a timeout to set up their final defensive possession. A pass from Chase England found Trae Gaines and the Lions' sophomore guard drained a trey to secure the victory for Piedmont.
The Scots out shot Piedmont 45% to 37% in the first half, but the Lions out rebounded MC 14-10 and deposited 10-of-14 free throws (71%) to establish an advantage at the intermission.
MC rallied and out scored the Lions 32-30 in the second half despite being out rebounded again 22-17 in the closing half. Maryville did not attempt a single free throw while Piedmont took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe hitting 8-of-12.
An Oscar Butler three-pointer at the 4:47 mark gave Maryville a 57-49 lead, but the home team rallied with a 14-4 final run to earn the win.
Piedmont (10-9, 4-4 USA South) was paced by Chase England's double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Peyton Luken added 11 points.
Maryville (8-10, 3-4 USA South) was led by Christian Ford's 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The senior guard also dished out a team-high five assists. Jaumonee Byrd added nine points and nine boards while Spencer Shoffner finished with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting. Freshman Calvin Songster drained a pair of treys for eight points while Oscar Butler tallied seven points and five rebounds.
The Scots will return to action on Monday when they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to challenge the Pride of Greensboro College in a tough USA South road game. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
