The Maryville College volleyball squad picked up a hard-fought come-from-behind victory over Ferrum College, 3-2, before Averett University stopped the Scots' streak with a 3-1 win at Covenant College.
Maryville found themselves down 2-0 against Ferrum, before the Scots used a back-and-forth third set to give them a chance. Maryville took the win over Ferrum, 22-25, 16-25, 30-28, 25-13, 15-10.
Maryville saw a huge performance from Madison Coker, as she tallied 14 kills to go with eight digs, two assists and a service ace.
Coker had four key kills during the crucial third set throughout the final eight points, as Maryville would take the thriller and extend their regular season USA South Athletic Conference win streak to 49 matches.
Nia Haller and Mary Kate White each posted nine kills, while Kori Jacot added eight. Julia Vineyard had seven for the Scots.
Madison Smith tallied a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs, while Taylor Youell led Maryville with 23 assists in the match. Stephanie Gleason had a game-high 21 digs, while Sophia del Campo added 18 to go with Smith's 13. Kaitlyn Flickinger tallied 11 assists, while Yasmeen Chan had three service aces.
Ferrum College was led by Leteashia Clarke and Hannah Helbert who had nine kills each. Cheyenne Strickland had 22 assists, while Sarah Hendrix added 20 digs to go with Helbert's 17.
Maryville again fell behind in their second match of the day, 2-0, before they looked to repeat their feat over Ferrum against Averett. However, a 6-0 start to the fourth set in favor of the Cougars would be enough to slow Maryville, as they fell 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 10-25.
The win ended the Scots' streak of 49 straight USA South regular season victories with the 3-1 win.
Maryville saw Coker again lead the way with 12 kills, four blocks, three digs, an assist and an ace.
Kozemko and Vineyard each had eight kills, while Haller had seven.
Youell had 19 assists and eight digs, while Smith posted a 14-assist evening. Flickinger led the way with 20 digs, as Gleason had 15 for a total of 36 between the two matches of the day.
Hannah Shields was a force for the Cougars, posting a very impressive double-double with 23 kills and 12 digs. Sarah Smoot had 15 kills, while Keenan Marks led the squad with a double-double of 45 assists and 14 digs. Christiana Summa (16), Katelyn Holley (11) and Lindsey Boles (11) tallied double-digit digs for Averett.
Maryville goes 10-7 on the season, while holding a 7-1 mark in USA South Athletic Conference action.
The Scots will travel to Covenant College on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for their next conference contest. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
