The Maryville College women's volleyball squad dropped their second consecutive USA South match with a 3-0 defeat by Covenant College by the scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-23 on Tuesday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
Covenant jumped out to a 12-0 start in the first match. A Rachel Kozemko service ace kept MC to within ten (17-7), but the home team kept their distance with a .355 attack percentage while Maryville connected at a -.071 rate.
Momentum and runs played a key role in the second match. Leading 8-7, Covenant went on a 9-0 run and closed the door with a .304 kill percentage while Maryville tallied a .000 hitting percentage at the net.
Trailing 2-0 in matches, Maryville attempted a rally keeping the third set to within a 4-point swing throughout the challenge. A Rachel Kozemko and Madison Coker block made the score 21-20 in Covenant's favor. A Coker kill equalized the match at 23-23, but consecutive kills by Ginny Moore and Hannah Rogers gave Covenant the 3-0 home sweep.
The victory moves Covenant to 10-9 on the season and 8-1 in USA South play.
Maryville was paced at the net by Mary Kate White's six kills. Madison Coker added five kills. Madison Smith paced MC with 12 assists while Kaitlyn Flickinger led the defense with 14 digs.
The loss moves Maryville to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Maryville will now prepare to face Mary Baldwin College and Greensboro College on the Mary Baldwin campus on Friday.
