Box Score Behind a strong blocking effort at the net by Kori Jacot and Julia Vineyard and a double-double performance by Sophia del Campo, the Maryville College volleyball team advanced to the USA South volleyball semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Methodist University on Friday afternoon in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
The Scots (17-10) earned the victory by the scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-15.
The opening set victory was highlighted by back-to back kills by Mary Kate White and Nia Haller, to expanding their lead to 17-13. A Vineyard kill gave the Scots a 23-21 advantage before she deposited the set winning kill for the first set winner.
The second set saw the Scots post a seven-point advantage (19-12) behind a strong effort by Vineyard. The Monarchs rallied with an 8-0 run and claimed the set 25-23 with a block by Ashley Beardsley and Brittany Ter Meer.
The 1-1 match tipped in MC's direction in the third set. A 21-21 score swung in Maryville's favor following a key dig by Mary Kate White and a pair of kills by Madison Coker giving the Scots a 25-2 third set win.
Maryville closed the door on the match in the fourth and final set. A block by Vineyard and Jacot gave MC a 14-11 lead. Key kills by Sophia del Campo, Julia Vineyard, and Madison Coker gave the Scots a 24-15 advantage before Yasmeen Chan's service ace sent the Scots to the league semi-finals.
Methodist (20-10) was paced by Ashley Beardsley's match-high 16 kills. Maggie Harris tallied 32 assists while Chyenne Pump returned 20 digs.
Maryville was led Madison Coker's 14 kills. The all-conference standout also added a solo block and 5 block assists at the net. Sophia del Campo threw down 11 kills while returning a match-high 27 digs. Julie Vineyard finished with 9 kills, 2 solo blocks, and 3 block assists. Taylor Youell and Clara Adams directed the offense with 40 combined assists while Yasmeen Chan and Adams helped del Campo on defense with 29 combined digs.
The Scots will challenge the winner of William Peace University and Averett University at noon on Saturday on the campus of Covenant College.
