Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball program traveled to Birmingham, Alabama on Monday evening falling to Birmingham Southern 99-72.
The Scots battled back from an early deficit when Dante Hoppa deposited a basket making the score 23-24 at the 7:31 mark in the first period. The Panther shots over 57% from the floor to go on a 16-6 run just four minutes later and ended the half with an eleven point advantage, leading MC 48-35.
The first three minutes after the intermission Birmingham Southern went on a 9-2 run. As the Panthers maintained their shooting touch from the floor (32-for-61), Maryville could not find a basket hitting 31% (20-for-64) allowing the hosts to pull away for up to a 31-point lead. The Panthers did not allow many second opportunity shots for the Scots out rebounding MC 53-30 on the evening.
The victory moves Birmingham Southern to 2-5 on the season. Maryville falls to 6-2 behind Logan Brewer's team leading 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Dante Hoppa added 11 points and five rebounds while Emanuelle Garcia added 10 points after hitting three of MC's seven made treys during the challenge.
The Scots will look to rebound in another non-conference challenge on Wednesday. Maryville will host Berry College in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
