Box Score Maryville College's rally over LaGrange College fell just short on Saturday evening, as the Panthers took the contest, 73-69.
Maryville pulled to within one, 70-69, with 19 second remaining, but late free throws by Mike White and Mark Wagner allowed the Panthers to escape. The Orange and Garnet out-shot LaGrange, posting a 37 percent day. The USA South foe shot 22-of-60 from the field in the win.
The loss marks Maryville's 10th game with a margin of five points or less. The Scots are 5-5 in those contests.
Jaumonee Byrd posted a 20-point, eight-rebound day – his fifth 20-plus point outing this season. The junior has compiled 999 career points, as he looks to cross the 1,000-point plateau during his third year in the orange and garnet. He's current four rebounds away from a career mark of 500 rebounds.
Byrd is one of three players that could reach the career milestone this season for the men's basketball team. Oscar Butler, who posted 12 points and six rebounds against LaGrange, is sitting with 963 career points. Fellow senior, Christian Ford, sits at 992 points after his seven-point day against the Panthers.
Along with those totals, Spencer Shoffner added 12 points on 2-of-4 from long range. He led the Scots with three assists. Tyler Spicer added five points, while Logan Brewer tossed in four. Tanner Torres scored three, while Jaylen Bowyer, Antonio Jackson and Calvin Songster each contributed two points.
The Panthers had two players score in double digits, as Justyn Olson tallied 18 points. Mark Wagner added 11, while Jordan Johnson and Braxton Ford each bucketed nine points. Mike White and Nick Mitchell both scored eight points.
The loss drops the Scots to 10-11 on the year, while posting a 5-5 record within the USA South. LaGrange moves to 10-10, 4-6 within league play.
MC will look to host a two-game weekend, playing Huntingdon College at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Maryville and LaGrange will have a rematch of today's game on Sunday, Feb. 15 for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Randy Lambert Court.
