Box Score The Maryville College men's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 7-0 shutout road victory over Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia on Tuesday evening.
The Fighting Scots attacked the net early and often out shooting the Wasps 28-8 during the contest.
Maryville tallied four goals before the intermission. Hayden Puryear played the ball to the top of the box allowing Cody VanKerschaever to score his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner at the 12:02 mark. Five minutes later Puryear ticked the twine with an assist from Thomas Whiting. At the 32:38 mark, MC's Caleb Lucas connected on a penalty kick for his first goal as a Scot. Freshman George Davies deposited a goal just three minutes later to conclude a 12-shot offensive attack.
After the half, the Scots' 4-0 lead was quickly expanded by Randy Reichenberger when the sophomore from Hendersonville connected for an unassisted goal following an E&H turnover at the top of the box. Following a corner kick, one of MC's eleven on the evening, Austin Foy collected the rebound and blasted a goal past the Wasp keeper. Maryville's final goal was scored by Bret Thomas when George Davies crossed a pass from the left side.
Maryville keeper Jon Taylor earned the shutout victory in net with 75 minutes of stellar work turning away a pair of saves on five shots on goal. Luke Wheat preserved the shutout turning away each of the three shots that E&H took on goal to close out the challenge.
Coach Pepe Fernandez's Scots will now prepare for their home opener on Friday when they host Centre College at 7:30 p.m. as they host the Maryville College Soccer Invitational.
