Box Score The Maryville College Scots opened their 2015 campaign against a tough South Region opponent, Berry College.
The Vikings and Scots fought through three tough sets, as Berry edged Maryville 25-23, 25-16, 25-19.
After getting down 23-18 in the first set, the Scots fought their way back behind back to a 24-23 score behind big blocks by Nia Haller and Madison Coker. A kill by Micayla Bedoian put Maryville away, 25-23, in the first set.
The second set saw both squads battle point-for-point to a 9-9 knot. The Vikings pushed ahead, 12-9, behind kills from Jessica Gum and Emily Stromberg. Stromberg surpassed her 1,000th career kill against the Scots during the first match.
Maryville pushed back, taking a 13-12 lead over Berry College, before four straight Berry bombs would give them the lead for good in the set.
Maryville (0-1) was led by Sophia del Campo, who threw down 12 kills for the Scots, while hitting a .375 clip. She also had seven digs, two assists and one ace in the game.
Coker had five kills for the Scots, while Haller and Julia Vineyard each added three. Taylor Youell tallied 11 assists. Clara Adams had a near double-double, recording eight assists and a team-high nine digs against the Vikings.
Berry College (1-0) saw Stromberg lead the way with a double-double on the night, as she totaled 11 kills and 14 digs for the tough Viking squad. Libero Katie Truluck added a game-high 15 digs, as Lauren Schmitz tallied 30 of Berry's 36 assists.
Maryville will look next to Lynchburg College during the Maryville College Invitational on Friday afternoon. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
