Maryville College's Kaitlyn Flickinger was named to the Charlie Wrublewski All-Tournament Team at Mt. St. Joseph for her stellar defensive performance during the two-day tournament.
The 5-foot-3 sophomore libero paced the Scots in three matches with 21 digs, nine assists, one kill and an impressive seven service aces.
"Flick played outstanding this weekend," Head Coach Kandis Schram said. "She played with poise and patience while showing great tenacity and grit."
The Scots struggled on Saturday against two tough opponents in Heidelberg University and Kenyon College.
In the day's second match, the Scots fell to a tough Kenyon College (5-3) squad, 3-1, by the scores of 23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 13-25.
During the first match, the Scots trailed by a score of 8-2, before the Scots could close the gap behind kills from Rachel Kozemko. A service ace by Clara Adams evened the score at 15-all, before a kill from Kozemko knotted things at 17. However, the Scots couldn't find a lead, eventually pulling to a 23-23 score. A kill by Kenyon's Tierney McClure ended the MC threat, 25-23.
Maryville took a 9-4 lead into the second set of the day with kills by Sophia del Campo and Julia Vineyard. The Lords and Ladies knotted the set at 17-all off a kill by Delaney Swanson, before a kill by Jensen Shurbert gave Kenyon its first lead of the set, 18-17.
An attach error by The Lords and Ladies, followed by a kill by Ellie Hamstra put Maryville back in the lead, 19-18, though. A kill by Madison Coker off a Taylor Youell set would give Maryville the set win, 25-23 late.
Maryville saw Kozemko with a team-high nine kills, while del Campo tallied seven. Youell tallied a double-double for the Scots, with 20 sets and 10 digs, while fellow freshman Clara Adams found a double-double with 12 sets and 10 digs.
Stephanie Gleason led the Scots with 13 digs.
Tierney McClure led The Lords and Ladies with 12 kills, while Delaney Swanson posted 11. Jensen Shurbert found 38 assists, while Swanson completed her double-double effort with 13 digs.
Heidelberg (6-1) defeated Maryville 3-0 on Saturday morning, by the scores of 14-25, 12-25, 21-25.
During the contest, Maryville saw Julia Vineyard lead the way with seven kills, while Sophia del Campo added five. Nia Haller tallied four kills in the match.
Freshman Taylor Youell had 14 assists for the Scots, while fellow first-year player Clara Adams totaled eight. The Scots were paced by Stephanie Gleason's 12 digs, while Youell added six of her own.
The Student Princes were led by Sarah Parker's 11-kill outing, posting a .500 kill percentage. Karlie Diruzza had 25 assists to lead the match. Rachel Raimondo had eight digs for Heidelberg, while Diruzza tallied seven.
Maryville will host Covenant College to open USA South Athletic Conference play on Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
