Box Score The Maryville College volleyball team earned a hard-fought, five-set victory over Covenant College winning the battle of the Scots 3-2 on Thursday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Maryville secured an early 2-0 lead with 25-23 and 25-23 wins in the first two sets. Covenant stormed back with 25-22 and 25-16 wins to force a final and deciding set.
MC's Julie Vineyard deposited a kill from Taylor Youell to make the score 12-12 in the final set. Madison Coker secured the Scots' 13th point before back-to-back kills by Rachel Kozemko gave Maryville the 3-2 home win.
The victory continues a 43-match regular season win streak within the USA South that began in the fall of 2012.
Covenant (1-6, 0-1 USA South) was paced by Ginny Moore's match-high 23 kills. Chelsea VanDyk added a dozen kills for Covenant. Schuyler Moore directed the offense with 46 assists while five Covenant players recorded double-digit digs led by Ariana Buchanan's 18.
Maryville (2-6, 1-0 USA South) was led at the net by Madison Coker's 14 kills. Rachel Kozemko posted a double-double effort with 12 kills and 16 digs. Mary Kate White added 10 kills. Clara Adams and Taylor Youell directed the offense with a combined 50 assists while Kaitlyn Flickinger led the defensive effort with 25 digs.
Maryville will now prepare for USA South foes LaGrange College and Huntingdon College at Covenant College this Saturday.
