Box Score Despite a pair of goals by Thomas Palmer, his 5th and 6th of the season, the Maryville College Scots battled to a 2-2 tie with Methodist University to kick off their 2015 USA South schedule on Saturday afternoon.
In a very physical game that totaled 34 fouls, Methodist got on the scoreboard first when Trevor Hendricks attacked a rebound punch out on a corner kick and slipped it by Maryville keeper Jon Taylor.
The Scots tallied an equalizer at the 34th minute when Caleb Lucas was fouled and Thomas Palmer buried a quick free kick at the top of the box in the lower right of the goal.
The teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the intermission.
In the second half, just before the 60th minute, Maryville's Hayden Puryear found Palmer and he blasted his 6th goal of the season into the lower left past Alex Rabone.
Methodist forced the match into extra periods in the 76th minute when Erik Nordseth took a free kick into the net making the score 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Maryville's offense took a pair of shots on goal in the overtime periods while their defense did not allow the Monarch's an opportunity for a shot.
In goal, Maryville's Jon Taylor recorded five saves in 110 minutes.
Following the tie, Methodist goes to 2-4-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in USA South play. Maryville is now 5-1-1 and 0-0-1 in USA South action.
The Scots will now prepare for a USA South battle next Friday at Ferrum College.
