Youell, Adams earn double-doubles in thriller

Box Score

The Maryville College volleyball squad picked up the first win of Head Coach Kandis Schram's 30th season in a thriller fashion on Friday night during the Maryville College Invitational.

Freshmen Taylor Youell and Clara Adams led the way for the Scots, each boasting their first collegiate career double-doubles while in the Orange and Garnet. They helped the Scots to a thrilling 3-2 win, by the scores of 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 15-12.

Youell led the Scots, posting 22 assists and 10 digs. Adams, also a fellow freshman, posted 15 assists, while matching Youell's 10-dig effort.

Maryville took the first set by a deciding margin, 25-15, behind a string a six-straight points late in the set. The run was highlighted by two hard kills by Sophia del Campo, as well as a service ace by Rachel Kozemko.

Kori Jacot found the final kill of the set, off the assist from Adams.

The Scots looked to dominate in the second set, as well, taking a demanding 20-7 advantage. However, the Hornets found their fire, storming back eight unanswered that was littered by kills from Lynchburg's Jennifer Garrett.

Maryville slipped away with a 25-23 win to lead 2-0 going to the third set.

Lynchburg wouldn't go away, though, as they took advantage of the third set 4-0. The deficit would be something the Scots could never break through, though, coming as close as 24-23 late behind a key block from Jacot and Julia Vineyard. The Hornets would take the third, 25-23.

A back-and-fourth fourth set saw 15 ties and five lead changes. The Scots took a 17-14 advantage behind two kills by Mary Kate White, but could not hold the lead. Kelly Lane would get the deciding kills, 25-23, to send the match to its deciding set.

Key kills in the fifth set by del Campo and Jacot, followed by a service ace from Youell would allow the Scots the victory.

The double-doubles by Youell and Adams each led the Scots (1-1), as MC's offense was spread around. Maryville was led by del Campo's 10-kill effort, while she hit at a .360 clip. She also added seven digs and a solo block.

Kozemko and Vineyard each added eight kills, while Madison Coker, White and Jacot each tallied seven.

Stephanie Gleason led the Scots with 11 digs, as Kozemko matched the 10 from Youell and Adams.

Yasmeen Chan totaled four service aces in the win, while Jacot added five blocks.

For the Hornets (1-1), it was all Garrett, who checked in with a double-double 15 kills and 15 digs. Kelly Layne added 10 kills, while Sam Page led Lynchburg with 20 digs. Lynn Walsh had 30 assists, as Gabby Myers added 16.

The Scots will look next to face a talented Washington & Lee University squad at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by a 4 p.m. match against Birmingham-Southern.
