Scots fall in two tough matches on Saturday

The Maryville College Volleyball Scots faced a tough day during Saturday's Maryville Invitational, as Washington & Lee University and Birmingham-Southern College defeated MC 3-0.

In the day's first game, Washington & Lee University escaped the Scots 3-0, by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-15.

The Generals went on a 9-3 run to open the first set to distance themselves behind kills from Jenna Gustafson and Mackenzie Shand. Maryville would fight back to a 12-9 score, as Rachel Kozemko and Madison Coker found points.

MC saw Rachel Kozemko finish the match with six kills to lead the Scots. Julia Vineyard, Mary Kate White and Madison Coker each added four of their own to compliment Kozemko.

Defensively, Taylor Youell led MC with seven digs and 11 assists, while Kaitlyn Flickinger and Stephanie Gleason each tallied seven digs. Clara Adams added six assists to go with Youell's 11, while Coker and White each found two service aces.

The Generals were led by Anna Lausberg's 17-kill effort, while hitting at a .483 clip. Mackenzie Shand had eight kills, while Katie Volk tallied a game-high 10 digs. Elena west totaled 32 assists for the Generals in the win.

In the day's second match, Maryville faced the hard-hitting Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College. Maryville couldn't find their rhythm, as BSC took the win, 25-12, 25-10 and 26-24.

The Scots found their touch in the third set, taking an 8-1 lead over the Panthers, extending that to 12-5 behind kills by Kozemko and Coker.

However, Molly Peavy and Amelia Collins would give the Panthers a boost, providing five of the next six points to know the score at 12-all. From then on, the Scots and the Panthers would battle through eight ties and four lead changes before Laura Van Peursem and Jeneva Salter would take the win with two straight kills, 26-24.

The Scots saw Coker and Kozemko each finish the match with six kills, while Adams added a team-high nine assists. Youell contributed seven assists, while Kozemko added nine digs to lead the Scots.

Birmingham-Southern saw Salter finished with 13 kills, while Van Peursem added 11. Marjorie Ward tallied 10 digs, as Katie McCormack led the game with 34 assists.

Maryville falls to 1-3 on the young season. The Scots will look for a rebound, as they travel to Mt. St. Joseph for a three-game Charlie Wrublewski Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12.
