Chenier breaks own mark in 30-19 win over LaGrange

Box Score

The Maryville College Fighting Scots kept their USA South streak alive, as they downed the LaGrange Panthers, 30-19, on Saturday to remain undefeated.

The Scots Elijah Chenier broke his own mark from last week, when the sophomore back rushed for 233 yards. That mark bests his 232 mark last season, as he again ranks second in the MC record books with his performance against LaGrange.

Chenier averaged 13.7 yards per carry in 17 attempts, as he accounted for two Maryville touchdowns. He helped Maryville to 514 total yards, including a 320-yard rushing performance over the Panthers.

Nick Myers was 18-for-31 for 195 yards and a touchdown, as he rushed for 27 yards on six carries and a score.

For LaGrange, it was all quarterback Connor Blair. He went 32-for-48 for 297 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He also had 18 yard on six carries.

With Saturday's win, it sets up a huge game on Senior Day for what could be for the USA South Championship. Maryville will be hosting Huntingdon College at 1:30 p.m., as the Scots will host a Blackout on Honaker Field.

Both teams went scoreless until the 4:34 mark of the second quarter. Myers finished a nine-play, 69-yard drive with a 10-yard run of his own. His jaunt gave the Scots a 7-0 lead late in the first half.

LaGrange would need only six plays to cover 70 yards on their next drive. Blair went 3-for-3 through the air, as he connected with Josh Hardrick for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:50 left in the half. The Panthers and the Scots were tied at 7-all just before the half.

However, Maryville would strike again with just 9 second remaining in the second quarter. Myers connected with Gianni Montgomery for a 21-yard touchdown. Alex Willard's kick was good, as the Scots held a 14-7 lead at the break.

Maryville would take the opening drive and cover 68 plays in just 10 plays. Willard would kick a 32-yard field goal with 10:16 left in the third quarter. The field goal would give Maryville a 17-7 lead.

Blair would march the Panthers 72 yards in eight plays on their next drive. He went 5-for-5 on the drive, as he found Jackson for a 7-yard touchdown pass. With 6:13 left in the third quarter, Maryville held a 17-14 lead.

Ethan William's 60-yard kickoff return would put the Scots in good position at the LaGrange 37-yard line. Chenier would finish up the five-play, 37-yard drive with a 2-yard run. Willard's kick attempt failed, as Maryville held a 23-13 lead with 4:03 showing in the third.

Chenier would score again with 7:25 left in the game. The sophomore carried three times on the drive for 21 yards, including his 5-yard touchdown scamper. Willard's kick was good, as Maryville led 30-13 late in the fourth quarter. The drive covered 55 yards in only four plays.
