Box Score Maryville College's rally fell just short on Sunday afternoon, as the Scots fell to Piedmont College, 3-1.
The Lions earned the victory after turning back a late rally by the Scots.
It took Maryville three set points to earn their first set, after they fought off a Lions attack. A kill by Julia Vineyard from Kaitlyn Flickinger gave the Scots the set, 27-25, after taking a 24-23 and 25-24 lead. Maryville's rally saved the match, after Piedmont took the first two sets.
The Scots took control, 17-13, during the fourth set, but a Lion rally pulled Piedmont back. The Lions used a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 18-17. Maryville fended off four total match points from Piedmont, aided by a key block by Vineyard. However, back-to-back errors by the Scots would give the Lions a 28-26 win in the fourth set and the match victory.
Abrianna Jones led Maryville (13-11, 7-4 USA South) with 11 kills, as she tallied two digs and two blocks. Junior Nia Haller had 10 kills for the Scots, as she had a double-double 11 digs to go with two aces, two assists and two total blocks.
Brianne Sidner had seven kills, as Kori Jacot and Vineyard each tallied five.
Saidee McDaniel had a team-leading 28 assists, while Flickinger added seven. She also had a team-leading 28 digs, as Haller was matched by Mackenzie Marcrum's 11 digs. McDanie and Yasmeen Chan each had nine digs.
Piedmont (11-10, 4-6) was led by Kaitlyn Loesel's double-double of 12 kills and 18 digs. Katelyn Durmire had 13 kills, while Amanda Trotter added 12.
The Lions' Lainey Choiniere had 48 assists to go with four aces, as Heather Laprade matched her serving efforts. Haley Hixon had 21 digs to lead the Lions defensively.
The Scots will take a week off, before traveling to Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 15. Maryville will face Wittenberg at 11 a.m., before they take on Otterbein at 1 p.m.
