Total team effort leads Maryville to 70-57 win

Maryville College moved to 7-1 before the Christmas break on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots downed Birmingham-Southern College, 70-57, on Randy Lambert Court.

The Panthers had only one player under 6-foot on their roster, but Maryville managed to dominate the paint with a 44-30 advantage. The Scots also managed to force 19 turnovers, as they took control on 19 points off turnovers.

MC struggled in the first half offensively, as the Birmingham-Southern zone defense forced the Scots to an 0-12 effort from behind the 3-point line in the first half. Maryville managed a 40 percent effort (12-of-30) in the first half, after than percentage dropped as low as 23 percent.

The only three-point play came from Emier Bowman's old-fashioned 3-pointer late in the first half, as Maryville bounced back for a 26-23 lead at the half.

Bowman sparked the Scots' run in the second half with two thunderous dunks.

Maryville held a slim 37-33 lead, as Bowman caught a rebound in mid-air and threw it down. Joshua Brooks mat a lay in just 20 second later, before Bowman got the steal and fastbreak dunk less than a minute after his first.

A 5-0 run after that set the Scots up to take the non-conference win and their seventh of the young season.

Maryville (7-1) finished the day with a 44.4 percent effort (28-of-63) from the floor, as they managed a 12.5 percent effort from beyond the arc with a trio of treys.

Jay Bowyer had 13 points off the bench for Maryville, as he added three steals, three assists and a rebound. Calvin Songster had 11 points, four rebounds and four assist, while Emier Bowman had nine points with his two dunks.

Tyler Spicer had nine points, five rebounds, three steals and a block, while Brooks added eight points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds. Chris Watson had eight points and six boards, while Colt Nokes had six points and a team-leading nine rebounds.

Blake Bowman, Dante Hoppa and Emanuelle Garcia each had two points for Maryville.

Birmingham-Southern College (3-4) saw Ian Thom lead the way with 17 points. He had seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block, while Matty Rudak had 12 points. Rudak added five boards and two blocks.

Chris Graham had 11 points for the Panthers, as the team shot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the floor. They shot 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

Maryville will take the Christmas holiday off with a 7-1 record and a 1-0 mark in USA South Athletic Conference play.

The Scots will play in the Music City Classic on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tenn. They face Shenandoah at 7 p.m. on the 29th, before taking on Hendrix on Dec. 30.
