Box Score The Maryville College Volleyball squad opened the 2017 season with a hard fought loss to a talented Washington & Lee University squad on Friday afternoon.
The Scots lost 3-0 on the first day of the Birmingham-Southern Invitational by the scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-13.
Maryville was hindered by errors on the day, recording 24 hitting errors in 114 total attacks to slow their momentum. Washington & Lee shined at the net, however, posting one solo block and eight block assists.
The Scots were led on Friday by sophomore Dejane Hester-Taylor, as the middle tallied seven kills behind a .261 attack percentage. Hester-Taylor neared a double-double with nine digs on the afternoon.
Fellow sophomore Brianne Sidner had six kills and four digs, while Nia Haller added three swats and four digs.
Saidee McDaniel, Arin Wyttenbach and Allison Botts all added two kills, while Lauren Espinal had one.
McDaniel also added a team-high 18 assists, as senior Kaitlyn Flickinger tallied two assists and a team-leading 10 digs. Yasmeen Chan had six digs.
For the Generals (1-0), it was Courtney Berry that led the way. She had six kills with a .500 kill percentage, while adding four block assists, two digs and a service ace.
Allison Webb and Byrne Gould had seven kills, while Gould tallied eight digs. Kiera Borthwick and Meg Guignon each added six kills to go with Guignon's 11 digs and Elena West's eight.
Maryville (0-1) will look next to day two of the Birmingham-Southern Invitational. The Scots will take on the host Panthers at 1 p.m. EST, before facing off with the Sewanee Tigers at 5 p.m. EST.
