The Maryville College Scots suffered their second-straight loss to start the 2017 season, as host Birmingham-Southern College took the second game of the tournament, 3-1.
Maryville won the first set, 25-19, before losing three-straight, 25-10, 25-23, 25-15.
After the Scots took control in the first set, the Panthers would jump out to a 12-2 lead in the second. Maryville would cut the score to 14-7, before BSC would go on a five-point run, eventually taking the set, 25-10.
Falling behind 7-3 in the second set, Maryville would claw their way back, trading points with the Panthers. After an Arin Wyttenbach kill, Birmingham-Southern would go on a four-point run for a 13-6 score. Maryville eventually fell behind 24-17, forcing six-straight set points with a kills from Wyttenbach and an ace from Yasmeen Chan. However, Rebecca Erwin would tally a kill for the 25-23 win, before the Panthers would take the fourth set behind a .452 hitting percentage.
The Scots (0-2) were led by Brianne Sidner's double-double of 13 kills and 19 digs, as she added a pair of service aces. Nia Haller had 12 kills, six digs and two block solos, as Lauren Espinal added seven kills.
Defensively, Kaitlyn Flickinger led the game with 20 digs, as Chan added 14 of her own.
Saidee McDaniel had 31 assists, seven digs, three kills, two service aces and a block assist for a complete match.
For Birmingham-Southern (2-0), it was Milea Ray who had a double-double 11 kills and 16 digs. Marjorie Ward added 13 kills. Caroline Johnson had 15 digs, while Emmy Kilgore had 13. Rachel Lee added 37 assists.
