Box Score The Maryville College Volleyball squad picked up their first victory of the 2017 season on Saturday evening, as they swept the Tigers of Sewanee, 3-0.
The Scots defeated the University of the South in three-straight sets by the score of 25-21, 27-25, 25-20.
Maryville found themselves down 11-9 in the first set, before the Scots used a six-straight run, scoring six of the next seven. That run included three kills by Brianne Sidner, while Dejane Hester-Taylor added a kill.
An Arin Wyttenbach kills and a Sewanee error ended the set with a 25-21 Maryville win.
The Scots jumped to a 3-0 lead with a pair of kills to from Lauren Espinal, before the teams traded points. Sewanee would take an 8-5 lead, eventually stretching that advantage to five, 12-7.
Maryville trailed 19-10, before another flurry by the Tigers would put them within striking distance of the set win, 23-13.
Maryville rattled off six-straight points that included a pair of kills from Saidee McDaniel and an ace from Yasmeen Chan.
Sewanee we earn set point off a kill by Destiny Stewart with the score 24-19. Maryville would rally behind the hitting of Nia Haller and Wyttenbach to tie the set at 24-all. The Tigers would again gain control, 25-24, before a trio of points would give Maryville the second-set victory.
Maryville would use that momentum for a 25-20 win in the third set for their first victory of the 2017 season.
The Scots (1-2) were led by Espinal – a freshman – as she posted 10 kills with a .500 percentage. Wyttenbach added eight kills with a .333 clip, with three digs, two block assists and a service ace.
Sidner and Haller had seven kills each, while Haller had 10 digs, two aces and a block assist. Sidner had seven digs and a block assist.
Defensively, Kaitlyn Flickinger had 17 digs, while McDaniel added 27 assists on the night.
Sewanee (0-3) was led by Destiny Stewart's 10-kill outing. Peyton Parent had 17 digs, while Constance Connolly added 12 assists.
Maryville will look next to the Washington & Lee Invitational on Sept. 8-9. The Scots will face Meredith College (5 p.m.) and Washington & Lee (7:30 p.m.) on Friday night.
