Scots sweep Brevard behind Youell's double-double

The Maryville College volleyball squad moved to .500 on Saturday, as they completed the sweep with a 3-0 win over Brevard College.

The Scots would hand the Tornados only their third loss of the season, as they took the victory 28-26, 25-20, 25-10.

Taylor Youell would lead the Scots in the match with a double-double on the day. The sophomore junior recorded team highs with 18 digs and 13 assist in the shutout match.

Maryville would open the match against Brevard with a 28-26 win in the first set. The Scots would record a .222 kill percentage in the set, as Nia Haller tallied seven kills.

The senior had a .545 hitting percentage in the opening set, as she neared a double-double with five digs. The Scots had five total blocks in the set, as Maryville overcome a 22-18 deficit for the victory.

Maryville would jump out early in the second set, 4-1, as they wouldn't lose the lead in the set. Brevard would cut the score to five late, 22-17, before they use a 3-1 run to make it 23-20. Madison Wilkerson and Haller would shut the door, however, with a pair of kills late for a 25-20 win.

In the third set, it was all Maryville, though. The Scots would ride a host of Tornado errors, as they jumped out to an 8-2 advantage with only one kill.

Kills by Saidee McDaniel and Brianne Sidner would give the Scots a 12-8 lead, before Maryville would use 13-2 run that included eight-straight MC points to close out the match, 25-10.

Maryville (8-8) followed Youell's double-double with a nine-kill, 11-dig effort from Haller, as the senior added two assist and a pair of blocks.

Sidner had eight kills and four digs with two service aces and a block, as Lauren Espinal had seven kills and four blocks. Dejane Hester-Taylor had a complete game with six blocks, five digs, three kills and two assist for the Scots.

Kaitlyn Flickinger had 13 digs and six assists, as McDaniel had nine assist, six digs and a pair of kills.

For Brevard (6-3), it was Stephanie Lambert who had eight kills. Josie McElroy had 24 assist, while Maggie Weiss added 24 digs.

Maryville will look next to a trio of road contests. The Scots will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to face off with No. 3-ranked Emory University on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the Orange and Garnet will face a double-header at Piedmont College. They'll face the Lions at noon, before taking on the Hawks of Huntingdon College at 2 p.m.
