Maryville runs over Greensboro's pride, 48-6, behind 437 rush yards

Maryville College earned its first USA South victory of the season on Saturday, as the Scots rolled up 617 yards of total offence in a 48-6 win over Greensboro College.

The Scots' offensive line shined on the day, as Maryville rushed for 437 yards on 63 attempts. The Orange and Garnet averaged 6.9 yards per carry, as the defense held the Pride to just 176 yards of total offense.

MC used 13 different players in their 437-yard day, as the Scots followed Kyle Larson, Davien Montgomery, Jesse Benavides-Munoz, Justin Byrd, Kyler Long, along with others. Maryville tallied five rushing touchdowns on the afternoon.

Elijah Chenier had his breakout game of the season, as he carried 15 times for 151 yards. He averaged 10.1 yards per carry on the day, while scoring a touchdown. Elijah Hairston had 95 yards on 14 attempts with a touchdown, as Chase Christmas had 89 yards on 10 carries.

Quarterbacks Adam Diggs (3 carries for 13 yards) and Caine Adamson (6 for 25) added rushing scores on the evening, as did Khashawn Decker (4 for 18).

Diggs was 11-for-19 on the day for 100 yards, as he connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Mac Seagle. Adamson was 5-of-7 for 71 yards, while Kris Castillo was 1-for-1 with 9 yards. Trey Pope added one pass and a rush attempt in the game.

Seagle had 58 yards on three catches with his touchdown, while Simon Holcomb added 55 yards on a pair of catches to lead the MC receiving corps.

Freshman Bo Hering recorded a career high eight tackles, while recording a tackle for loss. Eddie Burton added five tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup, as Trey Melton added four stops and a 10-yard scoop-and-score.

MC had a total of seven tackles for loss and a sack on the day, while breaking up eight passes.

The Scots were hindered, however, as they tallied nine penalties for 96 yards. Greensboro had six penalties for 46 yards, as the game held numerous offsetting and declined penalties.

For Greensboro (1-3, 0-1 USA South), it was as Chastin Robinson. The quarterback went 10-for-21 for 96 yards and the lone touchdown for the Pride on the afternoon. Kamryn Webster went 4-for-13 for 36 yards passing, while seven different runners could only amass 44 yards across the ground.

Ryan Wahl had three catches for 56 yards and the touchdown, while punter Jonathon Pfeiffer had 10 punts for 409 yards that included a 74-yard bomb.

The Pride tallied 114 tackles on the day, as Garratt Brannoc (16), Kenon Reynolds (14), Josh Cross (14), Kasseem Bagley (10) and Greg Picquet (10) all recorded double-digit stops.

Maryville (3-2, 1-1) scored first, as Louis Briggs fumbled a pitch. Melton recovered the fumble at the Greensboro 10-yard line, going the distance. Andrew Tanner's kick sailed wide, as MC led 6-0 with 10:30 left in the first quarter.

Adamson would add a score, capping a seven-play, 51-yard drive. The freshman quarterback rushed the final yard, as Tanner's kick again sailed wide. With 2:07 left in the opening quarter, Maryville led 12-0.

The Scots would get those two points back, however, as MC's defense held Greensboro at the 9-yard line. The snap sailed over Pfeiffer's head on the punt, sailing through the end zone for a safety and a 14-0 Scots lead.

With 5:34 remaining in the second quarter, the Scots would strike again. Chenier would end a seven-play, 69-yard drive with a 28-yard jaunt to pay dirt. Tanner's kick was good, as MC held a 21-0 advantage.

Maryville would add another score with just 49 ticks left in the first half. The Scots needed only four plays to cover 49 yards, as Diggs found Mac Seagle down the middle for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Tanner's kick would fail, making the score 27-0 at the half.

On Maryville's opening drive of the second half, they would score again. Hairston would cover the final 12 yards of the eight-play, 76-yard drive with his feet. Ian Hubbs' kick was true, as Maryville led 34-0 with 11:34 showing in the third quarter.

MC would add another on their next drive, as the defense earned a turnover on downs. It took 11 plays and 76 yards to score, as Adam Diggs rushed the edge for a 9-yard score with 3:16 left in the third. The Scots would lead, 41-0.

Greensboro would get on the board, however, with 1:02 left in the quarter. Robinson would handoff to Quaevon Cannon, before he would reverse it to Garret Hall. Hall would toss the flea flicker to Robinson, who fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wahl. The six-play, 75-yard drive would end with Pfeiffer's PAT sailing wide, making the score 41-6.

The Scots would add their final score with 8:20 left in the game. Decker would rush 9 yards for the score, capping a seven-play, 64-yard drive that saw Christmas rush for 49 of those, including a 31-yard streak. Hubbs' kick was good, as the final score was 48-6.
