Chan records six aces to lead Scots in sweep of Scotties

Maryville College bounced back from a tough loss on Friday night, as the Scots swept Agnes Scott College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Maryville posted 13 service aces in the three-set match, with six of those going to senior Yasmeen Chan. She helped knock off the Scotties by the scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-12.

For the match, the Scots tallied a .313 hitting percentage as a squad, as they held Agnes Scott to a .065 performance.

Maryville jumped to an early 5-1 lead, as Saidee McDaniel had a kill and an ace. Brianne Sidner and Meredith Bonee each had a kill in the rally, but Agnes Scot would answer with a five-point rally of their own to take a 6-5 lead on four Maryville errors and a Tiara White kill.

The Scots tallied each of the next eight, as Sidner posted a pair of aces to go with kills from Bonee, Madison Wilkerson and Dejane Hester-Taylor.

Maryville would ride that run, as they finished the match winning seven of the last nine points. Chan had a pair of aces, as Sidner, Hester-Taylor and Bonee recorded kills for the 25-16 first-set win.

The Scots used another early rally in the second set, as they jumped to an 8-2 lead on kills by Lauren Espinal, Bonee and Sidner. McDaniel had an ace in the run, as Maryville extended that lead to 16-6. Sidner, Hester-Taylor and Espinal tallied kills in the final four points of the match, as the Scots would take back-to-back sets by the score of 25-16.

Maryville came out hot in the third set, as MC had only one error in the 25-12 match-clinching set. The Scots hit .423 in that set, as they held Agnes Scott to a (-.037) mark.

Sidner, Espinal, McDaniel, Hester-Taylor, Arin Wyttenbach, Rachel Kozemko and Linnea Liebert posted kills in the final set, as Chan had a pair of aces. McDaniel and Hester-Taylor would also add an ace each to earn the sweep, 3-0.

Maryville (11-8, 6-3 USA South) was led by Sidner's 12-kill effort, as she hit .296 for the match. The junior had four digs and a trio of aces, as Chan led the way defensively with 20 digs, six aces and five assists. Hester-Taylor had eight kills at a .438 clip to go with six digs and an ace, while McDaniel had a team-leading 28 assists, five kills, three aces and three digs.

Agnes Scott (4-17, 2-6) saw Morgan Pearson record a team-leading six kills, as Tiara White tallied a double-double of 15 assists, 12 digs, four kills, two aces and a block. Musumaulai Galoia had five blocks, as Makayla Nash had 11 digs for the Scotties.

Maryville will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The Scots travel to Berea, Ky. to take on the Mountaineers with a 7 p.m. first serve.
