Scots down Brevard, 29-3, in USA South opener

The Maryville College Fighting Scots earned their first victory in the USA South opener, as MC downed Brevard College, 29-3.

The Scots rolled up 454 yards of total offense that included 207 yards through the air in the victory, as MC held the Tornados to just 104 total yards.

Maryville defense rallied for three turnovers that included a fumble and a pair of interceptions in the game, as the Scots led the battle of possession with 37:39.

Maryville posted 247 yards across the ground, as 11 different rushers tallied marks. Elijah Chenier led the way with 77 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. The senior back had a long of 46 yards, while Marcus Pierce added 74 yards on nine carries.

MC's Nelson Smith was 12-of-17 for 159 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Fellow freshman Trevor Thomas went 5-of-11 for 48 yards on the day, as Juwan Hill had a pair of catches for 74 yards.

Clayton Ogle and Mac Seagle each had two catches for 25 yards, while Jordon Ligon had a pair of snags for 20 yards and a score.

Dalton Cole led Brevard with a 4-of-10 passing effort for 17 yards. He added 7 yards across the ground, while Tyler Gregory had nine carries for 19 yards.

MC's Ian Hubbs went 3-for-4 on the day for field goals, as the senior booted a 41 yarder.

Defensively, the Tornados were led by Samuel Butikofer's 13 tackle afternoon, as he had 2.5 tackles for loss. Wesley Ross added 10 tackles, as Kaleb Woods added an interception.

Maryville saw Tavon Johnson record five tackles, including a sacks, as Bo Hering had four tackles with 1.5 sacks. JaCorey Jackson had four stops with two sacks on the day.

Michael Bailey and Avery Jones each had an interception for Maryville, as Andrew Collings recovered a fumble.

Maryville (1-2, 1-0 USA South) would strike first at the 11:07 mark in the first quarter. A nine-play, 52-yard drive stalled at the 18-yard line, as Hubbs would center a 35-yard attempt for a 3-0 lead.

Brevard (0-3, 0-1) knotted things at three-all just 13 plays later, as they 46-yard drive stalled at the Maryville 2-yard line. Jose Flores 20-yard attempt sailed true with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

A four-play, 54-yard drive that saw a 62-yard pass from Smith to Hill would be capped as Smith would rush the final 6 yards on the ground for MC's first touchdown of the contest. Maryville led 10-3 with 12:01 left in the opening half.

Hubbs' 41-yard attempt at the 8:35 mark would make the score 13-3 at the half.

At the 5:08 mark in the third quarter, Hubbs again would find a field goal. MC's seven-play, 14-yard drive stalled at the 17-yard line, as the senior's 33-yard attempt made the score 16-3.

With 9:52 left in the game, Maryville would use a 10-play, 77-yard drive to find pay dirt. Chenier would clear the final yard on the ground, as Hubbs' extra point attempt was blocked. That left the score at 22-3.

Maryville added a final score with 2:09 left in the game, as Smith found Jordan Ligon for an 8-yard touchdown. Hubbs kick was good, as the Scots took a 29-3 victory.

Maryville will return to action next Saturday, as they host Huntingdon College on Honaker Field. The Scots will kickoff at 1 p.m.
