Maryville fights off 2-1 deficit to defeat Lynchburg, 3-2

Maryville College picked up its second consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots fought off a 2-1 deficit to defeat Lynchburg College, 3-2.

After taking the first set, 25-21, Maryville would see a pair of sets go to the Hornets, 26-24, 25-18. The Scots clawed their way back, taking the final two sets, 25-20, 15-10.

Rhianna Tyldesley would lead the way for the Orange and Garnet, as she hit .286 for the match. The sophomore had 11 kills, six digs and an ace.

Meredith Bonee narrowly missed her second collegiate triple-double with 25 assists, 13 digs, seven kills and five service aces, as Brianne Sidner added a double-double 19 digs and 11 kills.

After a 19-19 tie in the opening set, MC would rally. A pair of aces from Bonee led the way, as Arin Wyttenbach added a kill. MC scored seven of the final nine points to win set one, 25-21.

The Scots would jump out to a 6-0 lead in the second set, before five straight Hornet points knotted things at 16-all. MC and Lynchburg traded points back-and-forth, before an MC would find set point, 24-23. However, the Hornets scored the final three points of the set behind a pair of Scots' errors, 26-24.

In the day's third set, Maryville would again take an early lead, 7-2. Lynchburg battled back, knotting things at 11-11, before scoring 10 of the next 13. A kill by Lindsey Lang and an MC attack error would leave the Scots trailing, 2-1.

MC found themselves behind, 19-17, in the fourth set of the day. The Scots rode a kill from Tyldesley, an ace from Sidner and a Saidee McDaniel kill to tie things at 2-all, with a 25-20 win. Maryville scored each of the final five points in the set to gain momentum.

A pair of kills from both McDaniel and Sidner in the final set of the afternoon aided the Scots in taking the win with a 15-10 score.

Maryville (2-4) saw Dejane Hester-Taylor follow Tyldesley, Bonee and Sidner. Hester-Taylor had eight kills and a trio of blocks, as Wyttenbach tallied seven kills, five blocks, two digs and an assist.

MacKenzie Marcrum and Yasmeen Chan had eight and seven digs, resepectively.

Lynchburg College (2-6) was led by Sydney Frink's 19-kill effort. Frink hit .273 for the match with four digs and three blocks. Katie Cornelius and Erin Farina had 20 assists each, while Lauren Stanford led the defense with 24 digs.

Maryville will look next to the Averett University Invitational. MC will play Salem College at Averett on Friday, Sept. 14. First serve in Danville, Va. is slated for 5 p.m.
