Sidner's double-double, Hester-Taylor's 10 kills not enough against Generals

The Scots ended the Bicentennial Invitational Classic on Saturday afternoon in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium with a close 3-1 loss to Washington & Lee University.

MC and the Generals had just 14 points in margin of victory, as Washington & Lee took the first two sets by a two-point score. The match saw a total of 19 ties and seven lead changes, as the squads went back-and-forth.

Maryville moved to 1-2 with the 23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25 loss.

The Scots followed Dejane Hester-Taylor's 10-kill, three-block effort, as the senior hit .471 for the match. Brianne Sidner posted a double-double of 19 digs and 16 kills, as she posted three block assists and a pair of service aces. However, the Scots were hindered by nine reception errors and hit .121 for the match.

Maryville hit .222 in the opening set, but four kills from the Generals' Brynne Gould proved the difference. Washington & Lee found five total blocks in the opening set, holding off a late Maryville rally for a 25-23 mark. Brianne Sidner had five kills, four digs and a service ace in the first set to pull the Scots to within striking distance.

The second set proved to be even more of a back-and-forth affair, as the squads posted four ties and a pair of lead changes. Hester-Taylor added six kills in the set, as Sidner tallied five. The duo had a pair of block assists each, while Maggie Mathews added seven digs.

However, a late surge by Washington and Lee would give the Generals a 2-0 lead, as they took the second set in extras, 27-25.

Maryville outhit the Washington & Lee in the third set, posting a .207 effort. They held the Generals to just a .118 mark, as they forced nine attack errors. The Scots posted four service aces and three total blocks in the third set. Five ties and a pair of lead changes finally gave way, as the Scots extended for a 25-19 victory to force a fourth set.

Leah Green, Ashleigh Meade and Gould combined for 12 kills in the fourth set for Washington & Lee, as they led the Generals on a .289 hitting attack. Four aces aided their effort, as again, the set saw five ties and a pair of lead changes.

Sidner added four kills and seven digs in the final set.

Maryville College (1-2) was paced by Hester-Taylor and Sidner. Saidee McDaniel added 27 assists, five digs and two aces, while Meredith Bonee had 18 assists, nine kills seven digs, three blocks and an ace. Mathews had 12 digs and six kills, while Mackenzie Marcrum added 11 digs, two assists and an ace. Arin Wyttenbach had four block assists and a trio of kills for the Scots, as Allison Botts added a pair of aces.

Washington & Lee (4-0) was led by Gould's double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs. Meade added 10 kills, as Anna Soroka tallied 30 assists. Caroline Gard posted a dozen digs for the Generals.

Maryville College will have the holiday off, before they travel to the Roanoke Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7. MC faces off with Greensboro College at 2:00 p.m. to open the tournament.
