MC sweeps previously unbeaten Bridgewater, 3-0, behind Bonee, Mathews, McDaniel

Maryville College Volleyball earned their third-straight sweep and their eighth of the season, as the Scots downed previously unbeaten Bridgewater College on Saturday, 3-0.

The victory marked MC's second 3-0 sweep of the day, as they defeated the 13-0 Eagles, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16.

Meredith Bonee exploded for her third triple-double of the season and the fourth of her Orange and Garnet career. Maggie Mathews and Saidee McDaniel had a double-double each in the Scots' sweep.

In the opening set, the two teams hit almost even. Bridgewater jumped to an early 7-2 lead, as the Scots fond only one kill from Bonee.

Maryville would score 18 of the next 22 points, however, as they pulled away for a 20-11 advantage. Mathews, Bonee, Dejane Hester-Taylor, Kelley Wandell, Arin Wyttenbach and Brianne Sidner recorded kills in the rally, as Mathews added a pair of service aces. McDaniel and Sidner also had an ace, as MC held off a late Eagle rally.

Bridgewater would hold off a pair of set points before a Mathews kill from Bonee left the score at 25-17.

The teams went back-and-forth in the second set, as Bridgewater tied it at 9-9. Maryville rallied, posting nine of the next 12 points. Sidner had a kill and an ace in the rally, as Mathews added a pair of kills.

Bonee added a pair of kills down the stretch, including the set winner from McDaniel, for a 25-20 second-set victory.

In the third set, it was all Maryville. The Scots hit .308 in the set, recording 15 kills to just a trio of errors. The Orange and Garnet held Bridgewater to a .089 effort in the final set, as a key 7-0 rally separated the two schools. Bonee had three kills, as Allison Botts recorded back-to-back aces in the run.

The Eagles fought off a pair of match points, before Mathews' kills from Natalie Watts ended the match, 25-14.

Maryville College (8-5) was led by Bonee who had 14 kills, 13 digs, 10 assists and a pair of blocks assists. Mathews added 13 kills at a .257 clip, as she completed the double-double with 12 digs, three aces and a pair of block assists. McDaniel also had a double-double effort with 25 assists, 10 digs and an ace.

Sidner had six kills and a team-leading 19 digs with two aces and a block assist, as Botts had four digs and four aces. Hester-Taylor added four kills, a block solo and a block assists, while Watts posted 18 digs and five assists.

Bridgewater College (13-1) was led by Rachel Gaston's 18-kill, 13-dig afternoon, as no other Eagle had more than three kills. Grace Hayes had 24 assists, as Jyailah Friendly (17), Taylor McNeely (14) and Jessica Bissmeyer (10) recorded 10-plus digs on the day.

Maryville will look next to Transylvania University on Wednesday, Sept. 25. First serve inside MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
