Box Score Maryville College used a block part on Saturday afternoon to defeat the Huntingdon College Hawks, 79-67, inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
MC tallied 11 total blocks on the day, while Kordell Kah and Felix Uadiale combined for 48 total points.
The game took nearly five minutes before either squad would score, as Uadiale broke the silence at the 15:14 mark. From there, the Scots' defense would hold Huntingdon College to just a 28.1-percent shooting effort in the first half.
In the first 20 minutes of action, Maryville boasted eight total blocks, including a trio from senior Joshua Brooks. Uadiale added a pair, while Brice Martin, Kevin Chong and Brandon Green tallied one apiece.
MC's defense efforts held the Hawks to just nine field goals – five of those coming from Cam Boyd and Damien Madison who combined for 16 of Huntingdon's 27 points.
Kah quietly led the Scots with a dozen points, as the freshman went 4-of-5 from the floor. He knocked down both of his 3-pointers, while going a perfect 2-of-2 at the charity stripe.
Uadiale was key in the 30-27 halftime lead, as the fellow freshman neared a double-double in his first 20 minutes. He had 10 points, nine boards, two blocks, a steal and an assist for a complete first-half effort.
MC went 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) in the opening stanza with a pair of treys. The added a 6-of-6 mark at the charity stripe, while outrebounding the Hawks, 25-21.
Maryville College fell behind by as many as eight in the second half, before the Scots rallied. A pair of Kah 3-pointers and a lay-in by Martin tied things at 46-all with 10:41. MC extended that to a 12-0 run – eight of those from Kah – for a 50-46 lead. It would be the last time the Hawks would hold the advantage.
The Orange and Garnet extended it out to an eight-point lead of their own at the 3:09 mark, before Huntingdon again found a rally. The Hawks cut it to two, 68-66, before a last-minute run extended MC's lead.
Over the final 1:55, Maryville outscore their Alabama counterparts, 11-1 for the final score. Uadiale would punctuate the win with a thundering dunk with eight ticks remaining.
MC boasted a 51.7-percent effort in the second half, going 15-of-29. They also added a 15-of-20 effort (75 percent) at the free-throw line late in the game.
Maryville (5-13, 4-7 USA South) followed Uadiale's double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds. He added a trio of blocks, two steals and two assists, as the freshman shot 8-of-11 from the floor. Uadiale added a 7-of-8 performance at the free-throw line.
Kah added a game high 25 points, while going 5-of-6 from long distance. He tallied nine boards, two steals and a block for a complete game. Both he and Donovan Jackson went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.
Jackson – also a freshman – added 10 points and three assists, while Brooks posted a team-high four blocks. The senior had eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
Martin added eight points of his own with four rebounds and a block, as Chong added five points, eight boards and a block. Green had four rebounds and a block.
MC shot 26-of-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor, while knocking down six treys. They went 21-of-26 (80.1 percent) at the charity stripe, while outrebounding Huntingdon, 47-39.
Jacob Champion's 12 points paced Huntingdon (9-10, 6-6), while Boyd added 11. Caleb Toney led the Hawks with eight rebounds, while James Harris had six points, six assists and three steals.
Maryville College will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Scots travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. to take on Covenant College. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
