Box Score Maryville College overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half, as the Scots rallied to defeat Pfeiffer University on the road, 96-83.
MC outscored the host school, 53-37, in the second half, as their 96 total points rank as a season high.
The second-half was a back-and-forth battle after the Scots went to the break trailing only three, 46-43. However, the Falcons came out firing in the opening minutes, outscoring MC 15-4.
Pfeiffer jumped to its largest lead, 67-51, on a pair of Sean Scott free throws with 14:16 remaining in the game. That's where MC's offense kicked in.
Freshman Kordell Kah knocked down a 3-pointer just 24 seconds later, opening up MC's rally. The Scots posted a 14-1 run with J.R. Sanders bucketing nine of the 14 points. That burst erased Pfeiffer's early second-half run, making the score 68-65 with just under 11 minutes remaining.
Kah added a pair of free throws, while a Brice Martin jumper cut the score again to three, 72-69. Sanders made it a one-point game with a pair of charity tosses, before senior Joshua Brooks would drive the lane for an MC lead, 73-72.
Sanders basketed a trey and a pair of back-to-back jumpers to give the Scots an 80-73 lead – one the squad would never relinquish.
Maryville overcame the 16-point margin in part by shooting 50 percent (18-of-36) from the floor with four 3-pointers – two of those from Sanders. The junior tallied 20 of his 29 points in the second half to go with four rebounds and a trio of assists. Martin had 12 points and eight boards, while Kah added 11 points in the second half.
The Scots also poured in 13-of-13 at the free-throw line over the final 20 minutes.
Maryville (6-15, 5-9 USA South) was paced by Sanders' 29 points, as he added five of MC's 13 treys. He had six rebounds and six assists on the day for MC.
Martin followed suit with a double-double effort of 20 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and an assist, while Kah added 19 points, six boards, two assists and a block off the bench. Kevin Chong had 15 points, as both he ad Kah had three treys each. Brooks had four points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals, while Felix Uadiale had four points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Barron Nease had three points, while Donovan Jackson added two.
On the day, MC shot 34-of-71 (47.9 percent), while tallying 13 3-pointers at a 41.9-percent clip. They also went 15-of-16 from the free-throw line. MC outrebounded the host, 46-32.
Pfeiffer (11-11, 6-8) shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor ahead of a dozen treys, while the Falcons had five players score double figures.
Taylan Rowe had 16 points, while Tyjarek Simmons added 15. Jamaal David added 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, while Scott posted 14 points of his own.
Maryville will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, as the Scots travel to Berea, Ky. for a USA South match-up. Tipoff against the Mountaineers is slated for 7:00 p.m.
