Box Score Record-Setting 10-2 Win Over Huntingdon
MARYVILLE – Maryville posted the highest goal total in its 10-year history of USA South competition with a 10-2 defeat of Huntingdon on Senior Day.
The Scots also clinched the Western Division crown of USA South and are scheduled for a home quarterfinal matchup next weekend against an opponent to be determined.
Craig McIlwraith scored his first collegiate hat trick on just four shots, while Ndubueze Henry added two goals and two assists. Henry came into Saturday's play second in the nation in assists with 11, so the two more added to his total no doubt keep the Maryville junior among the Division III leaders.
Henry, Will Stephens, Austin Vinyard and McIlwraith jump-started Maryville to a 4-0 lead with barely 30 minutes gone by. Huntingdon's Taylor Bradley scored in the 33rd minute, and the teams broke for halftime with the Scots in front 4-1.
Second-half goals belonged to Henry again, McIlwraith back-to-back in a six-minute span, Jorge Graniel, Tristan Skelton and Matthew Kiser, with Huntingdon's Aaron Harris grabbing one for the visitors. Saturday's goals by Stephens, Graniel, Skelton and Kiser were all their first of the season, and for Stephens, Graniel and Kiser the first of their collegiate careers.
Vinyard's goal was his team-leading 12th this season, with Henry next in line at eight.
Maryville's largest margin of victory in a USA South match was 9-0 against LaGrange back on Sept. 30, 2015. That also was the previous high-water Maryville mark for goals in a match during the USA South era, which began with the 2012 season.
Before Saturday's match, the Maryville program recognized seniors Stephens, Skelton, Vinyard, Luke Semaan, Davis Clothier, Ryan Clift and Josh Campbell for their outstanding contributions. Thus far in their careers, this group has been a part of 40 wins, 20 losses and two ties, and a USA South record of 25-11-1.
Also to date, now they have won two USA South regular season titles, one USA South tournament crown and participated in one NCAA tournament.
