Box Score Scots Fall 3-0 at Sewanee; Home Saturday
SEWANEE – At least it was a nonconference match.
Maryville dropped a 3-0 decision Wednesday night at Sewanee, falling 25-15, 25-15 and 28-26. The Scots entered having won nine of their last 10 matches.
But this night belonged to the Tigers, who held Maryville to a match hitting percentage of .044. The Tigers hit at a .212 clip and blistered 11 service aces over the three sets.
Set 1 saw four early ties and one lead change before Sewanee grabbed the lead for keeps at 5-4 on its way to 7-4. It was a 10-7 margin when the Tigers won six of the next seven points to go in front 16-8. The Scots drew within 18-11 on a Hannah Potts kill but Sewanee coasted to the 25-15 win.
Set 2 was all Tigers, who bolted to leads of 6-0 and 7-1. Potts with the kill and Amii Ingalls with the service ace drew Maryville within 9-4, and then the Scots won five straight to narrow the margin to 11-9. But Sewanee answered with five in a row the other way and was never challenged in another 25-15 score line.
Final Set to the Wire
Maryville in Set 3 fell behind again, this time 6-1. But the Scots thanks to Abby Payne's serving made a match of it by streaking in front 14-11 on a 6-0 run. Beginning with 15-15, there were 10 ties the rest of the way as Maryville fought off three match points before finally falling 28-26.
Isabella Samson posted six kills and Hannah Kammer five. Meredith Bonee added 16 assists and three Scots reached double-figures in digs – Riley Layton 12, Payne 11 and Emily Rogers 10. Payne chipped in a pair of service aces.
Maryville dropped to 10-8, having played 17 of those 18 matches away from home. But the Scots at 6-0 in the USA South can look ahead to Saturday's tri-match at Boydson Baird as the perfect elixir. Sewanee improved to 5-7 overall, with two of those victories against Maryville.
