Box Score Career-High Saves for Scots Keeper in 0-0 Result
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mykal Manfred turned in a career moment when the Maryville Scots needed it most.
Manfred posted double-digit saves for the first time as a collegiate goalkeeper and Maryville came away with a key road point after a 0-0 draw at Covenant. Manfred's previous saves high was eight on four occasions, including twice this year. He had eight saves Saturday in the Scots' 3-2 double-overtime win at LaGrange.
The junior on this night made five saves in each half, and every one was crucial. Covenant built a 30-8 advantage in shots, but Manfred and the Maryville defense kept the home side off the scoreboard in the match played on artificial turf at Chattanooga Christian School.
"The mental fatigue, turf and rain really hit us hard tonight," Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez said. "Covenant outplayed us most of the game, but Mykal was there to save us. He was outstanding.
"Although we would liked to have had three points, we are happy to get the shutout and head into the home stretch of the season in first place."
The clean sheet was Maryville's fourth of the season, and Manfred has had a hand in all four. He owns three complete shutouts this year and one shared shutout with teammate Carter McAdoo. On offense, Davis Clothier got off three shots for Maryville, while Ndubueze Henry fired two on net.
The result keeps the Scots on top of the USA South's Western Division at 2-0-1 for seven points at the halfway point of the conference regular season. Huntingdon at 1-0-1 is second with four points. Maryville hosts Huntingdon for Homecoming on Oct. 23.
Maryville overall is now 9-2-1, while Covenant is 5-3-3.
The Scots are back home Tuesday against Berea in a 7 p.m. start.
