Scots Blanked at Brevard

Box Score

Maryville's Offense Stifled in 31-0 Loss

BREVARD, N.C. – Maryville never could get the offense going and dropped a 31-0 decision Saturday at Brevard.

The host Tornadoes led 17-0 at halftime and needed just three plays to score on their opening drive of the third quarter. Brandon Norris caught a 59-yard TD pass from Taylor Jackson for a 24-0 margin. It was Jackson hitting Luis Alvarez later in the third with a 14-yard strike that capped the scoring.

Maryville's best chance to dent the scoreboard came on its fourth possession of the game late in the first quarter trailing 10-0. The Scots went 42 yards in 10 plays, reaching the Brevard 27-yard line, before a lost fumble halted the drive.

The Scots forced a punt on the ensuing Tornadoes possession, taking over at their own 46. But six plays and 16 yards later, Maryville was intercepted.

After Brevard made it 17-0, Mykel Santos returned the kickoff 44 yards to the Brevard 49-yard line. But Maryville went three-and-out and punted the ball away, and that's how the first half ended.

In the second half, Maryville's only trip into Brevard territory came on the final drive of the game and reached the Tornado 37 when time expired

Balanced Possession Time

Time of possession for the game was nearly equal – 30:28 to 29:32 in Brevard's favor – but the Scots compiled just 143 yards of total offense to the Tornadoes' 362. Maryville finished with 41 rushing yards and 102 yards through the air.

Senior safety Grant Agnew tied for game honors with eight tackles and added a pass breakup. He matched his second-highest game tackle total, trailing only the career-best 11 set during the spring matchup against Brevard.

Also on defense, Anthony Green posted a career-high seven tackles and two pass breakups. Colby Manis chipped in six tackles and Logan Parker had five along with a pass-breakup. Bo Hering contributed the Scots' only sack for minus-10 yards (pictured below).

Brevard's Jackson completed just 14-of-24 passes, but four of those went for touchdowns against no interceptions. Maryville quarterback's Nelson Smith and Trevor Thomas combined to go 19-of-33 for the 102 yards and one interception.

Maryville drops to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the USA South, while Brevard is now 3-3 and 3-1.

The Scots are at North Carolina Wesleyan next Saturday in a noon kickoff.
