Scots Steamroll to Semifinals

Box Score

Maryville Blanks Huntingdon 3-0

MARYVILLE – This is what it looks like when Maryville Volleyball comes to play.

The top-seeded Scots showed their 16-0 regular season USA South resume was no fluke with an impressive 3-0 triumph over fourth-seeded Huntingdon. The score lines were 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.

Player of the Week Meredith Bonee kept it going with a season-high eight kills, 31 assists, 13 digs, two block assists and a pair of service aces.

Scots head coach Kandis Schram said the play of her senior setter was incredible.

"For a 5-1 setter to come up with eight kills and no errors is extremely impressive," Schram said. "Her serving was on target, and 31 assists in three sets – she just played stellar."

'Came Out Ready to Play Ball'

Maryville smothered the visiting Hawks from the start. Huntingdon didn't take a lead of any kind until the third set, and that was a 3-1 margin that disappeared by 4-4 and was gone for good.

"The team came out hungry and ready to play ball," Schram said. "We were at home with a nice crowd, and when you get into the tournament, it sort of elevates your drive and emotion."

Huntingdon this past Friday had put a real scare into Maryville before the Scots rallied to win the last two sets in a 3-2 victory. Maryville certainly wasn't about to overlook the Hawks in the quarterfinals of the USA South tournament.

"Because we just saw them, we talked about how tough it is to beat a team three times," Schram said. "But we came out hungry and it was impressive. We will enjoy tonight and get to work tomorrow."

The Scots head to Buena Vista, Virginia, for Friday's semifinals. Maryville takes on East No. 2 seed Meredith at 4 p.m., with East No. 1 and host Southern Virginia matching up against West No. 2 Covenant at 6:30. Saturday's championship match is set for 3 p.m.

Set 1 Set the Tone

Maryville raced to an 8-1 lead in Set 1 as Amii Ingalls, Reese Bailey and Bonee contributed three straight kills. Huntingdon narrowed the margin to 12-9 but then Maryville stretched it out again on Bailey and Bonee kills for a 19-11 edge. Bonee's fifth kill of the opening set wrapped it up at 25-14.

The second set was a carbon copy of the first, this time Maryville streaking to a 9-1 behind kills from Landry Frisch and Hannah Potts and a service ace from Frisch. Huntingdon closed to within 9-3 and then just like that it was 19-5 on a double block by Bailey and Bonee. Ingalls closed it out with a kill for another 25-14 result.

In Set 3, Huntingdon finally grabbed that 3-1 lead only to see it snatched right away by the Scots. Maryville scored five straight for a 7-4 advantage, capped by Emily Rogers' service ace. Isabella Samson had five of her seven kills in the closing set and Ingalls added three more as Maryville closed the match with a 25-17 win.

Ingalls finished with eight kills and 10 digs, and Bailey added seven kills and five block assists. Samson contributed 10 digs to her seven kills.

Huntingdon defeated Brevard 3-0 in Tuesday's First Round match. The Hawks end their season 15-16 overall and Brevard ends at 9-19.
