Box Score Ridenour Leads Scots with 13 Points
MARYVILLE – It felt like the Scots could not miss on Wednesday night as they shot 50 percent from the field in an 85-63 win over the visiting Asbury Eagles.
Maryville was hot from the start of the game as a 10 point lead was achieved by the home team just under eight minutes into the contest thanks to a 10-0 run punctuated by a Felix Uadiale dunk.
"We wanted to bounce back from Sunday's loss to a really good team," said Scots head coach Raul Placeres. "This team was focused on moving forward to this game and playing well."
Chase Ridenour, who led the Scots 13 points, scored all of his baskets in the first. It was the third double-figure performance for the guard this season and his first since November 13.
"I was happy for Chase in the first half," said Placeres of the junior. "He brought the right mindset after a rough weekend. In practice this week he got to work and focused on what he needed to do and it showed tonight."
Second Half Fireworks
At the half, Maryville led 40-34 after the Eagles made a comeback attempt to close out the opening 20.
The Scots never relinquished the lead and were ahead by as many as 27 points in the second thanks to a Daryl Rice layup with 1:39 left in regulation.
In the end, Maryville notched an 85-63 victory and moved to 5-1 on the year.
For Placeres it was a total team effort that contributed to the domination in the second half.
"We brought really good energy in the second half. I was proud of the team effort tonight. We had three players in double figures with three more almost there.
"This is a special group of players who can score and create opportunities. I love coaching this team. We have to focus on building on tonight and getting better."
Team Effort
The Scots had an edge over Asbury in almost every statistical category as a team.
Maryville held the Eagles to 35.2 percent shooting on the night from the field while also outrebounding them 45-40.
On offense, the Scots tallied 19 assists while limiting themselves to only seven turnovers.
"Taking care of the basketball is key for us and we did that tonight," added Placeres. "There were few turnovers for us in the game and only two in the second half. We limited mistakes and it paid off for us."
The Maryville bench showed up in a big way with 37 points coming from the reserves. Jekobe Coleman led that group with 11 points.
The start of conference play awaits the Scots as Huntingdon comes to town on Saturday. The Hawks are 4-4 after splitting two games against Berry in their most recent action.
"We gotta get back to work and prepare for our conference opener this weekend," Placeres said. "The game with Huntingdon starts a new season for us as we transition into USA South play. Our fans showed up and made their presence known tonight and we hope to keep that support going."
