Box Score 2 Maryville College Volleyball opened the home slate on Sunday afternoon, as the Scots defeated Huntingdon College in a double header, 3-1, 3-2.
MC won the first match – a USA South contest – by the score of 25-14, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, before rallying to take the non-conference match, 25-21, 19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 16-14.
"Huntingdon is a great opponent, and we knew that it was going to be a great match," Head Coach Kandis Schram said. "They're just very athletic. I was pleased with how we started, and it was a great weekend. Identifying areas where we need to keep growing our game is what it's all about. I love our team. They are so much fun to coach. They are eager to learn those things and do those things. Today, I thought we played a great defensive game, and we saw the court really, really well. I think I serve receive was stellar."
Maryville 3, Huntingdon 1
In the day's first match, Rhianna Tyldesley led the way with a double-double effort. She deposited a dozen kills at a .417 clip, while posting 13 digs on the defensive side of the ball.
Isabella Samson chipped in 10 kills, while Merdith Bonee added 41 assists. Natalie Watts (18) and Maggie Mathews (11) posted double-figure digs.
Maryville held the Hawks to a negative .129 hitting percentage in the first set, as the Scots boasted 11 kills to take the opening set, 25-14.
The second set saw the Scots hit .355 as a squad to knock off Huntingdon 25-16, before the Hawks rallied in the third. Huntingdon took advantage of nine Scots' errors, as the Hawks hit .189 to take the third set, 25-19.
Maryville would find their swing again in the fourth, however, using a .333 hitting effort to knock off Huntingdon, 25-16 for their first win of the young 2021 spring season.
"Red played probably the best match of her career," Schram said of Tyldesley. "This is exactly what she needed from her knee injury. She is playing lights out, and it was awesome to see. She played great, and she played like a senior."
Tyldesley led the way with her double-double, as she added an ace to her credit for the Scots. Bonee's complete match saw 41 assists, seven digs, six aces, three kills and three blocks, while Samson tallied four digs and an assist to her 10 kills.
Brookly Wallet had nine kills and a pair of blocks, while Mathews had eight kills with her 11 digs. Hannah Potts had seven kills and three blocks, as Amii Ingalls posted a kill.
Watts led the defense with her 18 digs, adding a trio of aces with four assists.
For Huntingdon, Amy Tyma had a double-double 12 kills and 10 digs, as Morgan Ilsley posted her own double-double with a 27-assist, 10-dig performance.
Maryville 3, Huntingdon 2
In the day's second match – a non-conference bout – the Scots rallied from a 2-1 score to defeat the Hawks, 3-2.
Mathews posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs each, as Tyldesley again added double-figure kills.
"There was so much emotion in that first match, because that was the conference counter," Schram said. "It's early and playing in masks, we didn't know how winded we would be, and we tried to get different people in. That can really mess with your internal timing and psyche. For Maggie to be able to go in and out like that and still play with that kind of composure is great."
Maryville College (2-1, 1-0 USA South) took the first set, 25-21, following six first-set kills by Tyldesley. The Scots hit .257 in the opening set, before the Hawks would find a rhythm in the second and third.
Huntingdon College (0-2, 0-1) hit an impressive .414 in the second set to take a 25-19 win and tie things at 1-all. The Hawks added .394 effort in the third set, as they took advantage of 15 combined errors over the second and third to take a 2-1 lead. Huntingdon took the third set, 26-24.
Maryville hit .250 in the third, as Mathews posted four kills. Bonee, Samson and Wallet added three kills each to take a 25-16 win, before the Scots edged the Hawks with a 16-14 fifth-set score.
Mathews added three assists and an ace to her double-double, while Tyldesley narrowly missed her second double-double with 13 kills, nine digs, three assists and an ace.
Wallet had nine kills with a pair of aces and blocks, as Samson, Arin Wyttenbach and Lauren Espinal had six kills apiece. Potts posted five kills and two blocks on the afternoon.
Ingalls and Bonee had four kills each, as Bonee added 53 assists, eight digs, three aces and two blocks. Watts had a kills with a team-leading 16 digs, as Emily Rogers added seven digs for the Scots.
Huntingdon again saw Tyma and Ilsley finish with double-doubles, as Tyma had 27 kills and 15 digs. Jordan Hollis added 15 kills, while Ilsley had 44 assists and 16 digs.
Maryville will return to action on Tuesday, March 9. The Scots host Berea College for a USA South match at 7:00 p.m.
