Box Score Scots Rally Past Sewanee 3-2 in Overtime
SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maryville rallied with a pair of goals after intermission while holding the Tigers scoreless for the final 57½ minutes to steal a 3-2 road victory over Sewanee on Wednesday night.
Ndubueze Henry's header at the doorstep just before the end of the first overtime session was the sudden-death winner. Maryville claimed a throw-in near the Scots bench and Marshall Palmer's arching toss forced a Sewanee defender to head it toward the far post.
Henry was on the spot for the easy header home and the Scots had a well-earned victory. It came with just 11 ticks left on the first-overtime clock.
Only a minute earlier, the Tigers had appealed for a penalty but it was correctly denied by the referee. Maryville's defense was solid all night and grew in confidence as the game progressed.
That included Mykal Manfred in goal. The junior made all five of his saves after halftime, including one in overtime.
"It was a great result for the guys as we had to twice battle back from being a goal down," associate head coach Jon Baker said. "They showed great resolve and determination to not only get back in the game but kick on and win it."
Great Start to Second Half
The Scots tied it 2-2 just over two minutes into the second half.
Working from the defensive end, Maryville moved the ball forward and then Tristan Skelton won a 50-50 ball 10 yards shy of the penalty area. Skelton passed it to Henry down the left edge of the penalty area and Henry's shot sailed across the goal mouth, where William Bryan tapped it home for his first collegiate goal.
Maryville's first goal of the year was credited to an Alonso Angel deflection in the 37th minute, although Davis Clothier may eventually get credit. Angel won a free kick along the left sideline and then Clothier stepped in to take it. Clothier's strike was low and firm along the artificial surface and Angel was judged to have just nicked it.
Whether Angel flicked it on or not, the ball had eyes. It somehow made its way past multiple players from both teams before finding the far netting for a 1-1 tie.
Both Sewanee goals came in the first half and originated via corner kicks by Severin Velasco. The first one sailed to the far end of the 8-yard box and fell at the feet of Evan Poole, who nudged it forward to Drew Zolper for a side-footed tap from 4 yards out.
Velasco's next corner in the 43rd minute went to Poole again. This time he rifled one into the box that was redirected by Tyler Cozzie for a 2-1 Tigers advantage at the break.
Shots favored Sewanee by a 17-13 count.
Maryville is back in action this Saturday and Sunday in Washington at the Turk Emekli Classic hosted by Catholic. The Scots play the host school Saturday at 3 p.m. and then face Shenandoah on Sunday at noon.
