Box Score Maryville on Short End Against Undefeated Averett
ATLANTA – Maryville opened its weekend at the two-day Stormy Petrel Classic with a tough four-set defeat to undefeated Averett.
The Scots fell 25-20 and 25-22 in the first two sets, rallied to win 25-21 in the third and then dropped a narrow 25-23 decision in the fourth.
Maryville and Averett are the preseason favorites in their respective divisions of the USA South Conference. The Scots are 1-3 on the young season, while Averett improved to 7-0.
"I am extremely proud of our team," Maryville head coach Kandis Schram said. "They showed a tremendous amount of trust in their coaches and they played relentlessly – pushing each other to give just a little bit more.
"Averett is a quality team and it was a great match for both of us to play. I told the girls to hold their heads high. We have several more weeks of playing and if we are lucky, we will keep working and preparing for postseason play!"
Landry Frisch posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs to go with three blocks. Natalie Watts nearly reached a double-double with 20 digs and eight assists, while Meredith Bonee contributed to the offense with a .357 attack percentage.
Maryville led 9-5 in the early going of Set 1 before falling behind 21-16. The Scots pulled within 23-20 but could get no closer, dropping the set 25-20.
The Scots in Set 2 trailed 9-1 before storming all the way back to forge a 22-22 tie on a Frisch kill. But Averett tallied the final three points in succession to pull out a 25-22 decision.
In Set 3, there were eight ties before the Scots took control. Isabella Samson and Brooklyn Wallet combined for a block and then Bonee delivered a service ace to key a 6-0 run that made it 22-17 Scots. Maryville rode that momentum to the finish in a 25-21 triumph.
The Scots opened the fourth set by scoring the first five points. They led 17-14 on Bonee's kill and 22-21 on a Samson kill before Averett won three of the last four points to close it out 25-23.
Maryville takes on host Oglethorpe on Saturday morning at 9:30, and then the Scots finish the classic with a 2:30 matchup against Millsaps.
