Box Score 2 Maryville Takes Down Meredith, Greensboro
BREVARD, N.C. – Maryville got its first taste of USA South Conference play Friday afternoon and, well, the Scots gobbled it right up.
Competing in the USA South Crossover Tournament, Maryville took down Meredith 3-2 and – after just a 15-minute break – blanked Greensboro 3-0. The Scots hit their stride in the Greensboro match, winning 25-23, 25-16 and 25-10.
The Meredith scores were a roller coaster at 25-21, 14-25, 25-15, 14-25 and 15-7.
"I am glad we didn't let up today," Maryville head coach Kandis Schram said. "We have been matching the pace of our opponent instead of establishing our own. I was very happy to see us grab a couple of wins."
Maryville in that opener rode a double-double from Meredith Bonee for the second match in a row. Bonee posted 35 assists and 11 digs, while Isabella Samson ripped 13 kills and Reese Bailey 10. Natalie Watts had 20 digs and Landry Frisch 12.
Set 1 was tight throughout, with nine ties and numerous lead changes before Brooklyn Wallet and then Frisch posted kills to spark a late 4-0 run that proved the difference. After Meredith rebounded to take Set 2, Maryville used three different 5-0 runs to make quick work of the third set. The Scots won the last five points in the 25-15 final.
Meredith again turned the tables in Set 4, but Maryville was ready when it counted. The Scots used a 7-0 run that turned a 2-2 tie into a 9-2 and they never looked back.
Momentum Carries Over
In the second match, there were seven ties in that close first set. Maryville scored five straight points to go ahead 13-10, but Greensboro answered with five of its own for a 17-14 advantage. It was 19-15 Pride in the lead when Maryville rang up five of the next six points, capped by Samson's kill and Bonee's service ace for a 20-20 tie.
The teams were tied 22-22 when Samson, Frisch and Bailey came through with kills for the 25-23 outcome.
In Set 2, the Scots ripped to a 6-0 lead and then closed it out with seven of the last eight points. The third set was no contest as Maryville broke in front 12-2 and 17-3 before breezing to the finish.
Bonee just missed a double-double against Greensboro with 24 assists and nine digs. Samson finished with 10 kills and Wallet nine, while Watts contributed eight digs and Frisch seven.
Maryville with the victories improved to 3-6, while Meredith dropped to 5-4 and Greensboro 6-4.
The Scots are back on the same court Saturday afternoon against William Peace at 1:30 and Pfeiffer at 5:30. Maryville is home for its USA South Conference opener Wednesday against Covenant at 7 p.m.
