Box Score Scots Down Warren Wilson 4-0
MARYVILLE – Four different Maryville goal-scorers backed a combined shutout from Carter McAdoo and Mykal Manfred to lift the Scots past Warren Wilson 4-0 here Tuesday night.
Maryville scored two goals in each half and then withstood a physical challenge from the visiting Owls after halftime. Warren Wilson (0-5-0) was cited for five yellow cards in the final 35 minutes of game action.
But the Scots held their composure and posted win No. 7 against just one loss. Maryville is riding a streak of six consecutive victories – the program's longest run of good fortune since the Scots won eight in a row and went 10-0-1 in an 11-game stretch back in 2018.
That squad finished 14-4-1 and captured the USA South Conference championship before advancing to the NCAA tournament.
This year's unit is getting contributions up and down the lineup.
"It was good to see a big group of players involved who have not played a lot of minutes," Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez said. "We moved the ball and passed the ball well, although our finishing wasn't quite on. It was a wet surface out here tonight and you must really focus on following the ball into the net.
"Follow-up shots and controlling your touch as you finish is really important on a night like this."
Vinyard Back into Scoring Lead
Davis Clothier scored his second of the season, unassisted, in the 17th minute to get the Scots on the board. He beautifully one-timed a rebound home off a Ndubueze Henry shot on goal.
The Scots led 2-0 at halftime after Marshall Palmer scored his first of the season. The junior fired a scorching free kick from at least 25 yards out in the 42nd minute to double the margin.
In the 58th minute, Austin Vinyard was fouled in the box and converted a powerful penalty kick for a 3-0 cushion. It was Vinyard's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
And then Brooklyn Muccillo capped the scoring with a perfectly timed header after Palmer and Jorge Graniel set him up at the doorstep.
McAdoo went the first 75 minutes before giving way to Manfred. Both keepers posted one save apiece as Maryville outshot Warren Wilson 22-6. The Scots helped themselves with a 68 percent to 32 percent possession advantage.
"Our overall effort was really good, especially with as many minutes as some of our younger guys saw tonight on the back line," Fernandez said. "We got the shutout, and that was big.=
"We've had some mental lapses early and late in halves, and tonight we were able to avoid that. The guys kept their heads together and handled the conditions very well."
