Box Score Scots Open Strong but Fall 47-10
DANVILLE, Va. – A fast start wasn't enough for Maryville to slow down a solid USA South Conference opponent as Averett ran away with a 47-10 decision over the Scots on Saturday night.
The Scots took the opening possession of the game and marched 90 yards in just seven plays, culminating in Nelson Smith's 18-yard touchdown pass to Mykel Santos. After Averett tied the score on its first drive, Maryville came right back and went 44 yards in eight plays to earn a 26-yard field goal from Connor Rutledge.
But after that, it was all Cougars.
Maryville gained 192 of its 301 yards of total offense in the first quarter. The Scots then were held to just 12 yards in the second quarter and trailed 34-10 at halftime. Maryville in the second half drove into Averett territory one time early in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over on downs.
Santos caught seven passes for 114 yards – both season highs. It was his team-leading third touchdown of the season. Cam Malone also posted season highs with 77 rushing yards on 14 attempts. Smith finished 13-of-22 passing for 170 yards, with one pick and the one TD toss.
On defense, first-year linebacker Jamarcus Dunn corralled a game-leading 12 tackles, while Bo Hering added nine and Haydn Tanner and Colby Manis pitched in with seven apiece.
Maryville drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the USA South, while Averett is now 3-1 and 2-0.
The Scots host Southern Virginia next Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
