Box Score Potts, Wallet Lead Scots in Rally Over Berea
MARYVILLE – Maryville College Volleyball rallied and fought against a gritty Berea College squad Wednesday night, as the Scots took the USA South victory, 3-1.
The Scots trailed in nearly every set before storming back for a 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22 win in Berea, Ky. it marked the Scots fourth-straight victory.
"I think it showed a lot of maturity," Head Coach Kandis Schram said. "Trying to manage the points and not thing about the end game, they were able to chip away and chip away. I'm proud of that."
Maryville trailed by as many as 9-3 in the opening set, before the Scots turned things around on a Brooklyn Wallet kill and an Emily Rogers' ace. MC clawed back to tie it at 15-all, before taking the set, 25-20.
The Scots hit .235 in the first set, bolstered by Amii Ingalls' four kills, while Wallet and Landry Frisch added three each.
Berea again jumped ahead in the third set, as the Scots couldn't find the rally needed to cover the gap. The Mountaineers Carolina Robles had five kills, while MC hit .070 for the set.
The third set saw Maryville fall behind, 9-4, as the Scots would roll off five-straight points to knot it at nine. An Ingalls ace helped swing momentum, before Maryville scored the final six points off the set. Ingalls added another ace in that stretch, while Hannah Potts and Isabella Samson tacked on kills.
The Scots had six service aces in the set, Rogers, Frisch, Hannah Kammer and Natalie Watts added one each to Ingalls' pair. MC won the set, 25-21.
Maryville came out hot in the fourth set, as Potts had three kills in the first six points. Wallet added one in, while Ingalls tallied another ace.
"Because we kept having to move them around, I thought Hannah came up with a couple of key points," Schram said. "She had some really nice, deep kills. Those were very, very special. Brooklyn was able to come in and give us a lot of varied hitting, which is what we had to do against a team as gritty as Berea. Landry came up with nine kills, which I thought was really big. We had 11 aces as a team, as we held Berea to just six. That's huge."
The duo led the Scots in that final set, as Wallet had six kills. Potts added four, as Morgan Smithson and Meredith Bonee had two each.
Maryville (8-7, 4-0 USA South) finished the matching hitting .155 as a squad. The Scots saw Potts and Wallet record 10 kills each, as Frisch added nine. Wallet had two blocks, while Frisch added 14 digs and two aces.
Bonee had a double-double with 37 assists, 16 digs, four kills and four blocks, as Ingalls had 11 digs, six kills and four aces. Watts had a team-leading 17 digs, seven assists and two aces.
For Berea (8-8, 2-1), it was Robles with 13 kills and 10 digs. Deanna De La Torre had a double-double, as well with 10 kills and 12 digs.
MC will look next to a USA South weekend. The Scots travel to LaGrange, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 2. Maryville faces the host Panthers at noon before taking on Brevard College at 2:00 p.m.
